unorthodox crank pulley

Accessory pulleys will give you MAYBE 5 horses combined. I'm going to get the crank despite the rumors about poor performance with them! Performance also greatly depends on how it was installed. A poor install yeilds poor numbers. Now granted I may not get as much power out of the crank as a GSR motor would but it should be worth about 8-10 hp at the wheels given that it is installed right. The reason some of you with the pulleys may not be feeling the power is because it is not instant power! It takes about a week to achieve the maximum hp gain because the ecu has to re-calibrate to the lighter rotational weight of the new pulley! Honestly this rubbish about damaging your engine, it's just someone's word against others. Think about it, if unorthodox was making harmful parts for cars, I gaurantee you they would not be in business today. Like previous posts, Honda engines are internally balanced from the factory. Honda puts balancers on their stock puleys so that they can last for 8 to 10 years. they also have the balancers installed to reduce the cabin noise! That is all car manufactuers are worried about nowadays. Why do think the stock mufflers are so freakin quiet! But honestly who plans on having the same old d17 in 10 years? Here is a link to unorthodox's faq on harmonic dampeners: http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/faq_pulleys.html . They have instructions on how to install pulleys as well as dyno results from a handful of cars! The Accord V6 gains 20 horses just on the crank! Check it out!
well said.

^^Yeah boosted cars will get even higher gains! That is my point exactly! How can you increase horsepower by being picky! If you are truly passionate about your car then you would know that every little bit helps! 10 here and 5 there, it adds up pretty quick! Of course it's not adding 100 horsepower but it's better than stock! Of course a motor swap is the better option but not everyone has 5 or 6 grand to drop on a legitimate motor swap! If you put the right parts on the d17 and you know how to operate your transmission properly, you can run with stock SI's and RSX's which are what most of the SI's and RSX's that you see on the street are, STOCK! If you don't want to spend the money on it then don't spend it but dont start whining when you attempt to race an SI with a stock motor and get your *** handed to you on the pavement!

well i haveunderdrive pulleys and my car was crapin out after 3 or 4 months. and i only had a 400watt system..so i took everything out and just left the upgraded speakers and head unit and now its better then ever..not one problem.no need for a system anywayz..just nice speakers and a head unit.

Has anyone actually had this for long term? Like a year or two?
This could be the key to my 14 sec slip.
I'm about to order it. What size belts do you need , how much and where is a good place to get them?

Well I still don't know what to believe. But I'm a risk taker and I want a 14 sec slip. So ordered the whole set. 3 day, be here by friday. Track test it within the next two weeks before I leave the country.
If something goes wrong, I'll change everything back to stock and try to get Honda to fix it.

I like the FAQ on Unorthodox's site. It makes them seem safe to use? I am seriously considering this. Their dyno's are legit as well. The say what car, what other mods, which arent boosted or nitrous, and before, after, and what gear. They say all this info on the net about the pully's is bull, which makes sense. They have had them for years, and now all of a sudden these probs are coming up??? doesnt make sense. and the probs are from people on the internet, not the non internet people??? somebody started something, and it just kept going around the net. IMO

are these gains only with the underdrive pulleys? that faq had all their different pulley's including some that were the same size as OEM but lightened. would those yeild the same gains?

You have to purchase the properly sized belts as well! Unorthodox includes the proper size replacement chart. They don't actually come with the belts because every car's belts are just a little different! However you can get these replacement belts at Autozone or anyother auto store! About the stereo system, generally anything above 400 watts will start to strain your alternator unless you have an aftermarket battery or capacitator which is that battery lookin thing that stores up power for your amps when they need it most! Unless you are going to compete in SPL competitions I really wouldn't worry about draining your battery. Just dont blast your system when the engine is not running! but keep in mind that unless you have a capacitator installed, accessory pulleys can make your headlights dim even worse. Also keep in mind that the accessory pulleys are not underdriven meaning that they don't spin any slower than the factory ones! They actually spin a little bit faster becasue they are made of aluminum instead of steel. But for whatever reason they don't charge the alternator quite as quickly as the factory one. Not to mention they really dont provide significant gains which is why i chose not to get them! Others may feel differently. Whatever you choose, make sure you get them installed proplerly because it will make all of the difference!

The crank is the only one on our cars that is underdriven meaning that it is larger than the factory one so it spins slower and reduces drag on the engine! It is also constructed of aluminum which adds a few extra horses! The accessory ones like posted above are only lightweight! They do not enlarge the accessory pulleys because that would cause electrical problems since the alternator is not being charged fast enough! Those dynos are on completely stock cars! How else could you determine the true hp gain with other mods thrown in with the crank pulley? Of course there is room for more gain with other bolt on parts but they just want you to know what the crank can add alone! And as you know the gain will be different for every car! To me that was pretty impressive when that stock auto v6 accord gained 20 horses! That gives the auto crowd a bit of hope! There is alot of jibberish when it comes to this topic most likely from people who poorly installed their pulleys and when something went wrong were quick to blame it on the part and not how the part was installed or even something completely different!

Sigh at least I tried. Oh and remember that a smaller crank pulley will underdrive ALL accessories due to it's smaller size. Let's take the DH pulley, which has been tested to be perfectly balanced. It is very light weight, and much smaller diameter than stock. Comparable to the unorthodox. Now a couple people actually installed it...battery light comes on the same day, car dies, but makes 1whp at the dyno. Not even enough time for engine damage, which WILL happen. Talk to any honda tech and ask what the rubber does in the stock pulley. Only the smart ones will know the answer. You guys have obviously conviced yourself, despite other people's claims of oil pump malfunction, spun bearings, and blown turbo. But who knows, maybe nothing like that will ever happen.

I hate to keep filling up the thread but I just read up on the weight comparision between stock and UR! The stock pulley weighs 6lbs! The UR weighs in at only 1LB! Thats five pounds off of the crank so 2.7X5=13.5HP! That to me is worth it! And that is just purely following the weight loss figure not mention the underdriving. I think there are too many factors that could cause an oil pump failure to just single out the crank pulley. Sure it may seem to happen in many cases after the crank pulley is installed but there could have been a problem already and adding the pulley triggered the problem! I believe that if you take care of your engine: changing oil at most every 4k miles, getting your regular service and not drag racing it every weekend, then just the average stress an engine endures shouldn't cause the oil pump to fail not to mention that oil pumps on hondas and acuras were failing long before underdrive crank pulleys even existed! Claims is the key word! If you dont know the history of their engine, you can't automactically blame it on aftermarket pulleys!

Yes if the pulley is larger than O.E. than it is underdriving that accessory! And pretty much all aftermarket pulleys are light-weight unless noted otherwise! Hey Gearbox I think you meant to say smaller pulleys overdrive. Larger ones underdrive! If the DH pulley is lighter than stock and smaller in diameter, you could run a PA system off of your car at the rate that your alternator is charging! Ive never heard of a crank pulley that is smaller than stock! That would be eating your engine alive! The purpose of a underdrive pulley is to slow the rate of rotation of that accessory or crank so that the engine has to devote less power to turn that pulley and power that accessory or wheels! Think of it this way! As with any aftermarket part or part that did not come with the car from the factory, you run the risk of damaging your engine! Yes some aftermarket parts do run a higher risk than others but its still taking a risk! A turbo is even worse for your car than underdrive pulleys! I dont see anyone raggin on those! Crank pulleys are not for everyone! Some people dont want them and thats fine. But dont give it a bad name just because you HEARD of someone who had problems with it!

me too,
I might have a shop do it though. I normally do everything my self, with help from friends, but none of us have ever done one and I want it done right.

well now I might try iy myself. There aren't any import shops around here. The one place that was recommended to me said they normally don't do after market stuff.
For the guys that have done it themselves. Are the directions pretty detailed. And are there any concerns/thinngs to watch out for that need to be addressed.
I have access to all the tools I need at the base hobby shop.
As far as I know you gotta take the wheel and fender liner off.
Use and air wrench to get the bolt lose, cause it's a bitch right?
Now does it pull right off or is there a special tool to get it off?
What does it have to be torqued down to after you put the new one on?
Then for the alternator I'm gonna either have to move the power steering pump or maybe I can get it from underneath?
Anyone got any advice?

Say the big pulley is the crank and the smaller is the accessory. do you you see how the accessory spins at twice the speed of the crank? the accessory is being over-driven.
now say the smaller pulley is the crank, and the larger is the accessory. The accessory is spinning at half the speed of the crank, and thus is being under-driven.
So the miniscule DH pulley would under-drive all the accessories by a large amount.

You can reach the alternator from the bottom of the car, that is how i did mine.
