B&M Short Shifter review (vs. revo)
well, let me first say that I'm sorry that there aren't any pics with the install ... I don't have a digital camera ...
Second, installing the small blue anodized square piece into the shifter box is the BIGGEST PAIN IN THE *** EVER ...
... now that that's over with ...
install went pretty smoothly ...
ok, as some of you may know, the actual height of the stick is a lot shorter on the Revo. Some have made many complaints about the stick's welding breaking off and that's real bad ... but I never had any problems with that. Revo is a great system ... noticably shorter throws compared to stock... virtually no problems.
Let's get to the B&M ... ok, well as some of you may know, the B&M has a wide variety of parts that it comes with ... most of the pieces are anodized blue metal. The stick itself is a bit thicker than the Revo and it looks like it is made of billet aluminum ... which is nice. The Revo's is made of multi-colored stainless steel (multi colored because of different temperates of heat when it was welded). The B&M also comes with large metal bushings, which creates a solid feel when shifting ... the Revo does not come with any, so you are forced to re-use the rubber bushings on the stock unit ... and that can give a very mushy feel when shifting.
Unlike the Revo, the B&M unit has replacement parts for the stock shift box ... the Revo just comes with a completely new system.
Now, there have been many complaints on Club RSX about the shifter cables bending due to a poor design B&M's SS. These rumors are TRUE. The end of shifter cable is held by a blue anodized square piece and when the square piece goes back (ie. hard shifting into 2nd, 4th and reverse), then the blue anodized piece hits the shifter box and when shifts are very hard, the cable CAN become permenantly bent.
Solution? ... I read about the problems of the B&M BEFORE installation ... so I grinded down a lot of the stock shifter box where the potential problem existed ... unfortunately I didn't grind down quite enough ... but it works. On a hard shift, the blue square touches the shifter box, but doesn't quite *hit*. Sorry I don't have any pictures ... but I grinded down the shift box about 3 mm at an angle in front.
Verdict: the feel is pretty similar. In MY OPINION, I think the B&M gives a slightly shorter throw ... both have a great solid feel to it when shifting (provided you replaced the stock bushings on the Revo with aluminum ones). It really comes down to whether you like a taller shifter or a lower shifter ... the height of B&M's stick is about where stock is.
