Only way to find the "hidden power" in a D17 is to have a custom made Hattori Hanzo Intake. Then you must have the car dyno tuned by Pai Mei Motorsports. Then and only then will you find the "HIDDEN POWER" !! LOL

The new d17a2 is supposed to be a ULEV vehicle. Are there any restrictions on the engine limiting its HP? I'm sure this must have asked a 100 times over, but please don't flame me. Know for the million-dollar question; if the HP is being limited, how can the missing HP be let out (can the ECU be programmed to pollute a little more and perform a little better)? Cold air, straight pipes (or cat-backs, axle backs), cam gears don't seem to do much.

Great thread! My game boy advance SP has more hidden power than my civic ever will.
Last week some old lady in a walker got me off the line, but I eventually gained on her.
Anyhow.... it is what it is. So well hidden that we'll NEVER find it I get depressed everytime I think about it.

Okay, there is actually a secret code that Honda techs use to diagnose problem vehicles. It involves having an odbII code reader (free use from some auto places).
Here is what you do:
With the car off, plug in the reader to the car port near the gas pedal.
Hold down all three climate control buttons (AC, recirc, defrost) while turning the car to the ON position. DO NOT start the engine.
After the odbII is functioning, select DIAGNOSE and then VEHICLE EMISSIONS from the menu. There is an option called ULEV=OFF, which will effectively disable the catalytic converter, return vapor recovery system, and exhaust gas recirculation.
Turn off the car and start the engine. You should now feel at least 10-20 hp extra because the emission controls are effectively disabled. Now the only problem is this mode will reset once the car is off. So you would have to do this every time you want to drive. Not practical unless you own the reader and can take a couple minutes to do this. Good for track days I guess. But it works for sure.

Can you buy one of these odbII readers? And is this really true? It seems to good to be true? I have to pinch myself? Will the check engine light come on?

They have small ones for cheap.
What's up with this one

How did you find out about this?
Maybe if you turn off the ulev and put on a cold air intake it would make a diff?
There is an article on it check it out

Have you had a chance to try it?
Cause if it works I don't mind keeping one of those and waking up 10 mins earlier in the morning.
This seems to easy to do, How come no ECU flashers have made a code to modify the firmware. It seems to simple to be true.

The cheaper ones do not have nearly as many options and no text display. I don't think that will work for this trick. Mechanics don't want you to know this because it's illegal to turn off emissions. Tinman should know what I mean.

Okay before this gets out of hand...I'm sorry. That was a joke and completely made up. There is no such secret code. I thought that since there were other people joking around I would do the same. Sorry and don't go buy a $500 code reader just to try it!
