DIY Intake (PIC uploaded)
i am currently leasing a 2k3 EX coupe. i wanted to get some engine mods but didnt want to throw away money on engine mods that i will have to get rid of in about a year and a half. so i made my own intake. i took out the resonator, threw a K&N panel filter into the airbox and ran a 2.75 inch heat resistant tube to a nice cool spot down below with some mesh looking thingy on the end to keep crap out. honestly, i really felt a gain in the low-mid range. the engine sounds alot nicer too. i only spent 10 bucks for the tube that was very hard to find. i wanted to make it really nice so i spent half the day looking for a heat resistant tube. i found it at a local performance shop.

Pics? I took the resonator off and the car was running like crap and making a VERY loud noise like the muffler was broken. No low end at all.

at first i ran it with just the resonator removed. sounded too loud and lost low end power. then i put in the tube and it totally changed. the engine only sounds different at 3-4 k and i definately feel an increase in that range. i am very happy with the tube because its made of like 6 different layers of rubber and foils and there is no heat soaking since it is heat resistant. sorry gearbox, i have no digital camera. ill try to do it with my friends camera but no promises dude.

Oh okay cool. That makes sense, since the tube would restrict and control the flow better than being open. Helps with getting more cold air in as well.

the point of doing this was to experiment. i know i could have bought one for 30 bucks off ebay but i wanted to see what kind of gains i get. and i can move it around to any spot in the engine to get cooler air. thanks for the wise insight though.
So the tubing size is definitely 2.75? I created a thread a while ago about keeping the airbox and replacing the air filter. I originally wanted an aluminum piping. gearbox suggested it would would draw more heat so my project is on hold.
search: GanzFlow.
edit: Silicone hose is a good idea. But I cant find a website that sells one with the correct bends.

It's a good idea. The airbox helps act as a plenum for air to keep low end power. The tube is good for airflow and cooler air. Have you checked partsexpress.com for the tubing? They have it specifically for custom intake systems. It molds to whatever shape you want while retaining a circular shape.

I looked into partsexpress.com but my search yield no results. I searched Intake.

btw, sorry for the dirty engine and im still experimenting with where to run the tube. also, the blue thing is a slip on plastic piece that has a mesh like thing on it to keep the bigger particles out of the filterbox. where do you think is the best place to run the tube?

He has just as much risk doing that as when all the rest of the idiot car owners with there love and behold SRI's.... and then they wash there car and think its a good idea to shoot the intake filter with water to clean it off then drive it home 5 minutes later.... don't knock it till ya try it guys... i personally won't try it cause of the cost, but i don't think it's that bad of an idea... if he cleaned it up real nice that **** would be bad ***...

Who the hells doing that!? Hydrolock only happens when the entire filter is submerged in water
u dumbshits(nicoscivicex, prototype, slvrcivic)
i'm a fricken mechanical engineer. i planned to cut the hole in the bumper in the first place.
i also track my car, not like all u dumbshits that only street race or canyon run.
i live in souther california. where it only rains like crazy a few days out of the year. also, i still have the stock intake. its only a 5-10 minute job to do a swap. i think its poor planning of you guys not to see where i'm located

also, there is no way that my intake will even suck up rain. first its going to have to go thru the hole in the bumper. unless the rain is going herizontal, most of it wont get in.
basically, there is no way i can hydrolock unless i submerge my intake into a big *** puddle of water

Racing Sports Akimoto makes a spiral flex tubing that is insulated to block heat. I know Summit Racing carries it, I'm also sure you could find it elsewhere. Also, that hole in the bumper is nasty, needs cleaning up around the edges, whether or not you track your car. It's still hideous. Also, wouldn't it be more beneficial to make a collector that funnels the air to the intake? Not knocking you, cause I didn't try it, just offering a suggestion.
