Question What exactly is a downpipe?

It's what comes off of the header, right? Is it the part that has the cat on it, or does it connect to the cat? Why does everyone want to get a new one? Please give me some info.

Thanks.

well ... technically a downpipe is a pipe that comes after a turbo ... and has no cat. A test pipe is the same thing as a downpipe, but there is no turbo ...

everyone wants a test pipe because there isn't a cat for restriction ... better power! won't pass smog though ...

correct me if I'm wrong ...

just a little clarification. The pipe you are asking about is for ex models. Yes it is the pipe connected to the header, and yes the stock one has the cat welded to it. People want to replace it with either a down pipe/ test pipe or one with a hi flow cat attatched for obvious reasons ...less exhaust restriction = more HP.

its the component of the exhaust system connecting the header to the cat-back (catalytic converter is at the end of the downpipe, cat-back = after the cat). Aftermarket ones will either have no cat, or a high-flow legal cat, and they probably also have larger tubing 2.25" would be ideal; i dont know what stock is.

But getting the random tech would be useless for me, because in Virginia it is illegal anyways to swap out your cat for a new one unless the old one was damaged, or the car is at least 6 years old (or something like that). Sledgehammer anyone?
