Cleaning air filter on Injen RD CAI

I just bought the RD CAI and while gazing at the installation directions, I don't see happiness in my CAI future.

First of all, the instructions could be a little clearer. Granted this isn't a difficult install but when the second instruction starts off with "After the bumper is removed..." but there aren't any instructions on how to do that. Thank the Lord for the DIY forum.

Anyway my question for all of those that have gone before me is whether or not I have to take off the bumper to clean the air filter. That seems like a pain in the **** to do once a year.

I searched through the threads and didn't see anyone mentioning that this was the only way to clean the filter. If I have to do so I'll be very disappointed with Injen for not making that clear on their website or in their literature before I bought their CAI.

Am I safe in assuming that AEM doesn't have this little issue?

to bad instructions.

I don't know about the Injen CAI. To clean the filter on my K&N FIPK you just have to take it off, which is pretty easy cuz it's still in the top of the engine compartment.

To remove the air filter, you can access it by removing a couple of clips of the passenger fender wall. I've done it and its easy! I felt the same way until I installed it and noticed that I could access the the filter via the fender wall. IMHO, I think InJen's placement of the filter is better than where AEM has placed theirs, but its up to you.

xian,

Thanks for the input. I think Injen places the filter in a better location than AEM but it's the cleaning part that has me concerned.

Do you think it would be possible to cut a larger hole (big enough for the filter) than what Injen specifies and undo the lower pipe and slide it out at cleaning time?

a bigger hole might draw hot air from the engine bay.... but that is a good idea and I dont see why you couldnt do it!! its up to you man, do whatever is easiest for you!!

The bumper comes off in 5 minutes... It really isn't that big of a hassle. I do it every 6 months.

Creative thinking is what made this country great and I am resolved to finding a way to install the filter without having to take off the bumper to clean it.

I have some ideas that will make this a kick **** project. It won't make me rich but I think that this will turn out to be a great install.
