Unorthodox Pulley

I was just talking to a mechanic at King Motorsports in wisconsin about installing some Unorthodox Pulleys. He told me how much it would cost but then emphasized that they do not insure the installation saying that they are getting a lot of cars back with blown engines. He said that they have been blowing up between 1000 to 6000 miles after the installation. He said it was just the crank pulley that was doing this. I asked him why and he said it could be unbalanced. Does anyone know anything about this, i mean the ease at which these destroy our engines? I didn't know it would die this fast. Should I sell these?

The thing that concerns me the most is that King Motorsports is a really reliable place, they sell all that mugen stuff and build racing engines. The fact that this guy has personally seen a lot of these engines come in is making me worry.

I have AEM pulleys (p/s, and alternator).

I've had them on for about 30,000Km's...no problems whatsoever.

seriously, it's billet aluminum, so it can't be that unbalanced. plus, unorthodox claims that they test each pulley for balance...
then again, I would put that on my website, too

I just don't think that they are doing something right when they are installing them. Do they have an in-experienced mechanic doing the work? That can happen sometimes.

but what about the theory that the unorthodox pullies aren't designed to be used with the AEM pullies?

could that theory be correct, in that the balance would be thrown off?

could that cause the problem?

we need a mechanic in here

Who is bringing their motors in? Are they doing the work or is King Motorsports doing the work? And how are these motors being used? Just think about that before you question the company.

this is spoiling my desire to get the unorthodox crank pulley.

i was gonna mix the AEM two with the crank pulley from UR.

hrm...maybe I'll hold off for now!

cool...thanks!

did you do them all at the same time, or did you slap on the UR afterwards?

I'm wondering if I'll see much of a gain by slamming it on?

I was thinking of getting the crank pulley and a header at the same time. but then again, I might just save up for a swap. still not sure.

really?

I noticed a difference with the AEM pullies.

I had an intake and exhaust, and when I slammed on the pullies, I noticed a small difference through the whole powerband.

hrm...tempting, I might get the UR pulley and the kamikaze header (I have an LX), and THEN start saving for a swap

hrm....

i have heard the same myth about the crank pully around my local shops here. That the AEM pullies are ok but the crank pully will fu(k up your engine. So i never really got either of them. wheres a true mechanic when you need him

The majority of finger pointing & myths about Unorthodox Racing crank pulleys revolve around blown engines & messed up engines due to oil pump failures. That combination of being 15-20% underdriven (Ultra S) plus lightened kind of makes some old school engine builders tighten up.

UR admits that they have seen a lot of 1.6/1.8 Honda/Acura engines & certain Mazda engines suffer oil pump failures and have listed precautionary steps that higher horsepower engine builders should take.

If you are just going with basic bolt-ons and will never be going inside the engine, their crank pulley will be just fine for a 7th gen.

Supposedly the RVM pulley is better than the Unorthodox one. It only weighs 1.67lbs.
