Making a SOHC VTEC pull like a DOHC VTEC
hello and thanks for your help... I am purchasing a 1995 honda civic ex
and it comes with a SOHC VTEC engine with a manual transmission.. i was
thinking about doing a b16a motor swap but that would cost me around
$1,500... and the reason why i want the swap is to feel that strong pull when the
VTEC kicks in at a certain RPM... my question is... is there anything I can do
to make my SOHC VTEC pull like a DOHC without having to do the motor
swap? Help would be appreciated.. Thanks alot!

some people amaze me. do some research on the car....... please. you'll never really get a SOHC VTEC engine to scream like a DOHC VTEC one, beacuse the exhaust cam(not cams, only one), is not variably timed. so basically, youre ****ed
instead of the B16 conversion, go with a GS-R conversion (B18C), you'll be much happier with the end results, and parts wont be nearly as hard to find, especailly on the west coast.

i'd do the swap...swaps are now very reliable and you'll get nicer power gains. www.honda-tech.com

here is a mod list...should answer some of the questions.
1.5 block bored 20 over
20 over 9:1 D16 weisco pistons w/ rings
cunningham 1.5 rods
clevite77 bearings
reground 1.5 crank
stupid neformz block guard (gave up waiting on sleeves after 8 months)
unorthodox race crank pulley w/ tecII trigger wheel (for a later date)
unorthodox alt pulley
unorthodox adjustable cam gear
unorthodox aluminum flywheel w/ frictionplate (ballanced)
ACT extreme pressure plate with 6 puck clutch disk
STR intake manifold
climax fuel rail
RC 550cc injectors (for now, hopefully i'll need bigger!)
SX adjustable fuel pressure regulator
SX fuel filter
hondata intake manifold gasket
stock multi-layer steel headgasket
stock 1.5 throttlebody
Port Flow Design turbo worked cylinder head
Web dual valve springs and retainers
custom 321 stainless steel exhaust manifold
custom 304 3" downpipe
custom 304 dumptube
custom oil feed and oil return lines w/ electronic oil pressure gauge
tial 40mm wastegate
tial blow off valve
Inovative Turbo Systems t3/t04E turbo 50 trim w/ stage 5 exhaust
Precision 24x8x3 intercooler with custom end tanks and brackets
custom intercooler piping
Hondata S100 with boost option
3 bar map sensor
apexi AVCR boost controller
DX transmission
walbro in tank fuel pump
ARP head studs
and all new maitnance parts...water pump poil pump gaskets etc etc
dyno'd to 275-300 HP on LOW BOOST. the engine is still brand new. on the dyno, there was some spike in the boost and it cleared 300 whp on the first go because of the spike. since the engine is not broken in, it has been tuned to 14 PSI, producing 275ish whp and over 200 ft/lbs tq. 400 whp is quite possible on race gas. Compared to a 300whp B18, this easilly FEELS like a 400 horsepower motor...just due to the turbo size, the redline, manifold, the set up in general
and no. this isnt my engine.
