hello all I have a 92 sedan 1.5 litre 5 spd. questions:
1) if I replace the ECU with any ordinary aftermarket one, are they plug n play or do i have to do some procedure to reprogram it?
2) 1992 is exempt from emissions laws in my state due to age. is there any performance or MPG benefit to removing the cat and putting in a straight pipe? and what would I need to do to get the ECU to work with it properly?

Are you meaning like a K-Pro/whatever the equivalent for OBD1 is? There’s probably a base map you can run for it.
As for a straight pipe, there will be no tangible performance or mpg gains. You’ll really just have a way louder and awful smelling car.
