96ex front main seal fail?
96ex front main seal fail?
new to the forum so here goes,...
little oil leak just got really big. i'm guessing it's the front main seal (coming from behind main pulley). If this ends up being the source of the leak, what other seals and or gaskets am I looking at replacing while i'm in there? I recently replaced the HG in my 93' landcruiser and ended up replacing quite a bit more than just the HG. the civic has 190k and has had little engine work in the last several years. I figured this has got to be the best place to start.... suggestions?

If you have oil coming out from the bottom of the timing cover, you need to pull the timing covers off to locate the true source of the leak. Any leaks within the cover area will run out the bottom.
Camshaft seal and/or front crank seal (usually called oil pump seal in the catalog) are the usual culprits. Might be oil pump gasket, that would come out between the block and pump.
Inspect carefully.
I'd replace both shaft seals, replace the timing belt.
Maybe a water pump, maybe a tensioner pulley---- if they are original at 190k, I'd say to change both. OE for all parts IMHO.

Re: 96ex front main seal fail?
Condensation in the crankcase.
I'll guess that it's freekin cold there (28*F), you do mostly short trip driving, and the engine rarely gets to full operating temperature and maintained at that temperature for a long period of time (2 hours or more), which would slowly bake the condensation out.
IOW, it's probably normal for a short tripper in the cold weather.
My Hog gets a ton of yellow foam in the oil cap if I ride in the cold, and I ride when the temp is in the 30s sometimes.
