1991 honda civic sputtering and stalling
so 2 nights ago, it rained quite a bit. so me and my friend decided to go puddle driving. I managed to hit this huge one accidentally. slowing my car from 75 km/h to 30 km/h very fast. while driving around, i managed to rev it really high, no rpm meter, is a standard, in first gear. as in the tires were going about 40 km/h in first. after that i smelt kinda a burning smell of somthing, and thought nothing of it. yesterday i was driving home and it would sputter, mainly in second. wouldnt give me any any pick up till about 30 km/h then would finally start going. parked it yesterday then went to start it and it started but died tn didnt want to start anymore, i added oul because it was pretty low and it started fine after a bit, but then again today while driving it was sputtering in all gears and had a very low idle ( almost wanting to die )
the car costed me 200$ so i dont want to get an over haul on it. i just want to know if any one knows some problems it could be. please dont use abreviations. im not very vehicle savvy

Re: 1991 honda civic sputtering and stalling
It could be a few things causing the car to sputter.
Things like the Throttle angle sensor, fuel filter, spark plugs that need to be replaced, air filter that needs to be replaced, clogged egr valve, clogged catalytic converter or even a vacuum leak.
Best thing to do would be test some of those parts and maybe perform a tuneup if one hasn't been done recently.

Re: 1991 honda civic sputtering and stalling
Started after hitting a huge puddle.
First thing I would check for is moisture/water in the distributor cap.
Pull the cap (2-screws) and visually inspect the inside. If it isn't clean and perfectly dry, clean it with alcohol or electrical contact cleaner and wipe it dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
Alternately, just install a new cap (& rotor).
Likely scenario - You hit the big puddle and sprayed water all through the engine compartment. Some of hit hot things like the exhaust manifold and turned to steam. Steam penetrates everywhere, like in the distributor cap, then cools and condenses to moisture which shorts out the distributor and causes missing. It is hard for that moisture to get back out, so it just sits there causing trouble until you clean it.
Burn smell was likely unrelated- probably from water hitting the catalytic convertor or causing a belt to slip.
