My 93 civic d15b7 engine has developed a knock. I have come up with it has to be bearing related in the #1 cylinder, I take spark away from it and it goes away. without knowing the extent of the problem would I be able to get away with only taking off the oil pan and replacing the rod bearings if that were the issue?
would replacing the bearings on a worn crank be beneficial?

Drop the oil pan and see if you find metal shavings in it. If you do..
proceed to getting yourself a new engine because you may have metal shards in the block/heads.. Or take it all apart, clean it and buy new internals

Finally decided to check the bearings out.
Rod Bearings:

Main Bearings:

The main bearings that aren't all messed up were closest to the transmission.
What would cause main bearings to be this bad?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: 1993 d15b7 knock
I was sort of used to hearing main bearing rattle at high mileage on 5th and 6th gens. Never took one apart that had actually trashed them though.
I'm not a failure analyst. Ask your machine shop.
Almost all bearing failures are usually attributed to some sort of lubrication failure though.
The crank needs machined at the very least. IF those bearings spun in the block, it probably needs work too (tabs look to be intact, they didn't spin?).
And like the other reply stated, when bearings fail there is metal sent all throughout the entire engine and oiling system. You should find shavings in the head and cam lube passages, and maybe even the rockertrain.
The pitting makes me wonder if this ever had head gasket problems, or something that would have left antifreeze in the crankcase.
