I Damaged My Car!!!
I Damaged My Car!!!
I have a 99 Civic Lx (120,000miles) and I decided to to a couple drain & fills on my transmission. I bought the Honda Trans fluid and waited until the car was cold before I drained the fluid. I somehow caused a small crack in the casing next to the trans drain plug. It is causing a small leak. I figured I did enough damage & took it to a good repair shop I know. They drained all the fluid & I guess are going to use some good epoxy. Otherwise, I will need it to have it welded or replace the transmission. I don't think I am ever going to open my hood again!

Re: I Damaged My Car!!!
i doubt its your fault. ive done tons of drain and fills, hot and cold, and never had a crack form. metal gets tired over time and it likely would have cracked on its own anyways.

Re: I Damaged My Car!!!
We had a rookie do this to a trans, it's the only time I have seen it happen....
We figured it could have been one of maybe 2 things, or both:
Seal washer smashed out paper thin and wedged into the threads forcing the aluminum to spread thus cracking it, and/or seriously overtightening the drain plug.
Rookie didn't know enough to stop and figure out why or ask for help BEFORE damaging something. Someone with experience should have known when it didn't "feel right" going together and stopped.
Epoxy got this one to quit leaking, but I don't think anyone will ever get it to seal again if the plug is pulled later on.
AND the car belonged to an employee.
