Burning oil big time!

New to the forum...

i drive a 296,500 mile, '92 civic dx hatchback daily, about a year ago it started burning oil, a lot! now, its gotten to the point of going through 3 quarts every 400 miles or so. like clockwork. no kidding! it seems to burn it mostly on accelerations when its not fully warmed up, say first thing in the morning while getting up to speed in the hiway, or when leaving from work after sitting all day. huge plumes of blue smoke and very heavy fumes. seems to dissipate once it gets warmed up. doesnt seem to be getting worse as of late, but still, 3 quarts a week is getting a little rediculous! doesnt seem to be lacking power and it still runs very smoothe, just a lot of blue smoke. thoughts?

my probe gt was burning oil like crazy lately. fried my valve seals. switched from 5w-30, to 10w-40, and replaced 1 qt of oil for a qt of lucas oil stabilizer. it didnt fix the problem obviously, but smoking cleared up a bit, and havent been burning through half as much oil as was...

Re: Burning oil big time!

Rings could be either stuck or worn, or some combination of both.

At 300,000, chances are good that engine is probably about worn out.

Fix would most likely be to tear down and rebuild it, or find a low-mileage replacement.

Has it had a washable air filter for a good part of its life?

Try anything you want as far as oil goes, probably hard to hurt it any more than it already is at this point.

Although, occasionally, a soaking in Top Engine Cleaner can help loosen the carbon that causes the oil rings to stick. But don't hold your breath. And don't breathe the fumes from the stuff, it is brutal....
