Rep Power: 0 '89 Civic Transmission - To Rebuild or Not to Rebuild
I'm debating whether or not to attempt an overhaul on my old '89 Civic's manual 5-speed transmission. The tranny had to come off to replace the clutch, and while it's off I thought this might be a good time to try and correct some minor issues that have always bugged me. The main problem is that it's often difficult to shift into second, particularly from a higher gear - sometimes it takes more than one attempt. The reverse gear is also a bit stubborn, and makes a loud "crunch" sound when engaging. The other gears are not perfect either but it's the 2nd and reverse that are most noticeable.
The 5-speed manual on my 2nd-gen Civic shifts much more easily by comparison, and I'd like to see that kind of performance on this 4th-gen. But I'd like to get a bit of advice first, particularly how much time and especially money would be needed, assuming I do the work myself.
