Broken off exhaust manifold stud?

Broken off exhaust manifold stud?

Hey all. I'm tearing down the engine on my 93 Civic DX to replace the head gasket. I was removing the self-locking exhaust manifold nuts but one got sheared off pretty much flush with the manifold itself. There were also a few other studs that got left intact in the manifold after loosening the nuts. I'm trying to lift the head off the block, but these pegs are basically the last thing holding it on. I've attached a pic to show the broken stud and one of the studs left in the manifold. Does anyone have any advice on how to get these out, particularly the broken off stud?

ALL of the studs were supposed to stay in the head. But they are also supposed to unscrew somewhat easily too, so that broken one may have galled the threads in the aluminum. If it doesn't turn out, it may need drilled.


I can't see what you have there, so...

Remove enough hardware down below to allow the exhaust manifold to pull away from the head and clear the studs. Most have a bracket bolted to the block down low in front, or have the pipe attached a bracket bolted to the block somewhere under the oil filter area.

Remove whatever you need to allow the manifold to move, without unbolting the exhaust pipe from the manifold, and without undoing any of the exhaust.
All of the rest of the pipes under the car should have plenty of movement on their rubber hangers to allow the manifold to move torward the froont of the car (prybar).

Lift the head off.
Deal with the broken stud after the head is on the workbench.

Thanks! That worked like a charm! I was going about it the hard way, trying to push the cylinder head back and up out of the exhaust manifold. After I took that bracket loose and pulled the exhaust manifold forward, the head came right off. Now it's time to let the head drain for a while and then I'm off to the shop to have the thing resurfaced. The shop said they'd remove any extra studs left in the cylinder head as part of the resurfacing too. Again, thanks!
