Any 92 Civic auto tranny gurus?

Hey there, I have a 92 Civic EX 1.6 that's closing in on 240k. It runs like a top and the mpg's are so good I hate to put it to pasture. It's been my kid's car and is a great new driver car, I have 2 more getting their licenses soon. The last year the tranny has been slipping between gears off and on. Sometimes it has a solid shift and other times not. As of late it's slipped pretty badly going into 4th gear but will lockup solidly when you hit 50-ish. If I run it in D3 it then move it to D4 after up to speed it will often shift into 4th normally. I've read this may be a seal leaking not allowing enough pressure to build. Thoughts?

I'm contemplating replacing the tranny, around $250, or just moving on. The car is due for tires too, not sure about sinking $500 into it but then again there's not much for a decent car in the $1k range.

thanks,
Mike

I'm not a tranny guru, but like you I'm faced with similar issues. I have a 91 Civic LX w/1.5, and the transmission is beginning to "clunk" a little between gears. It's just crossed the 130K miles mark and I was recently advised to NOT change the transmission fluid because changing the fluid would potentionally create more problems than it would solve.

It also need new tires, and it was just in the shop last week with over-heating issues. Turns out it needed a new thermostat and a new heater hose. Just not sure how much more to keep sinking into it before I call it quits!
