93 smells like gas inside car
i took my car to get the emissions done on it and they failed it becuase my evap system has a leak somewhere. trying to figure it out i pulled up my back seat to make sure the fuel pump is tight on there which i just installed myself, ive been driving around with the seat up and ive noticed that when i stop the inside of my car smells like gas and the longer i sit the worse it gets but it doesnt when im driving. i also checked the outside of the car and it doesnt smell at all. could this be my evap leak and if so where would it be?
Re: 93 smells like gas inside car
Are you sure that you put the pump back together correctly? Did you make sure to REPLACE any gaskets? The cap that holds that pump down, could have been cross threaded when you put it on, it's pretty easy to do. You can also use a big flat head screw driver and a hammer. Put the screw driver on the slots and tap it so it tightens. That cap has to be really tight. Don't hit it to hard and break it....
Re: 93 smells like gas inside car
thats what im thinking, is that i didnt put it in correctly. the only thing is i dont have a cap over the top i have a few bolts that hold the pump in, and the assembly i bought didnt come with any gaskets just a couple of washers to throw on where the lines connect. ive also tried going through and tightening the bolts down even more but thats what seemed to make it worse than it was
Re: 93 smells like gas inside car
did you torque them to spec? and in the proper order? anytime I have more than 2 bolts, I try to tighten them in a star pattern (sort of like a tire). and never tighten one all the way until all bolt are started. Get a chilton's manual (or search on here for an online manual, there are quite a few)....man and do it exactly as they say too...

Fuel leakage detector:

LOL.
Seriously, replace the gasket and make sure there is no rust or debris on its sealing surfaces.

sweet il try doin that when i put it in i didnt check to make sure there wasnt debris on it and i definilty didnt tourqe to spec or do the star pattern, hopefully thats where my evap leak is too
Re: 93 smells like gas inside car
ok so i pulled my fuel pump assembly out today and found that my gasket on there had two rips in it. and would you guys know a good place i could find torque specs? i looked in my book and it didnt have any specs for the fuel assembly and tried google but thats pulls up everything your not looking for.
Re: 93 smells like gas inside car
got the gasket and noticed a big diffrence, the new one i got from bap came from honda and the gasket fit alot better and it was thicker and stronger, i put it on and tightened to the right specs with the star pattern and so far no gas smell
