Unhappy Suprise Engine Block

I purchased a 1994 Civic ex about a year ago. On the day I got it I took it for a drive up on the highway with speed limits of 70mph approx 30 miles went by and the engine threw a rod and bolts right through the block. The dealer replaced the engine and returned the car to me after about 2 months. I have been finding problems with it ever since. Engine ping upon acceleration, now there is what sounds like a knock when driving when the engine revs up to 1800-2000 rpm before it shifts and it is leaking oil pretty bad from the area behind the valve cover. I found out the car originally had a D16Z6 V-TEC block and now the block number is D15B7 with the V-Tec head on it. Can anybody tell me if this is what has caused me all the headache with the ping, knock and oil leak. If anybody can give me a clue as to how to fix the problems. I don't really care if the numbers on the car/engine don't match. As long as I know what to ask for when buying parts for it.

Hard to diagnose this with such little information... you need to take pictures of the oil leak for us to point you in the right direction. The ping could be a lot of things honestly... They probably replaced the motor with a junkyard engine hoping the problem would just go away

Re: Suprise Engine Block

I have some additional info if it helps. The knock is now all the time warm or cold engine and it gets louder and faster when you are driving and it revs up to shift. it starts with a sound like engine ping then that fades away as rpm rise and the knock gets louder and louder the higher the rpm. then it shifts and you again hear the ping. At an idle you can hear the tapping in the engine if you listen close if you rev it you hear a knock. I tried pulling plug wires one at a time to see if the knock stopped but nothing changed. It also burns alot of oil when revving up rpm in addition to the oil leak. The engine seems to pull hard when accelerating even with the smoke pouring out the tail pipe and the sound of the knock, but I am worried the engine is going to fail if I drive it aggressively.

Re: Suprise Engine Block

Hmm... sounds expensive... in a 94 you may be better off to run the engine for as long as you can and just replace it once it explodes The engine sounds like its going to fail driving agressively or normally unfortunatly. Find a replacement engine for cheap and get it ready for swap.

Re: Suprise Engine Block

Thanks for your input, I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I have checked the salvage yards for an engine to replace it. Not much luck locally. Found a few online but most want around a thousand for a used engine with only 90 to 180 day warranty. Any suggestions where i might find a quality replacement. I will probably try to do the swap myself. I guess I will be asking all kinds of questions at that time.
