To civic, or not to civic?

So, I've been looking for a civic/crx for a while now, and I finally found a 1990 honda civic hatchback. The body is in great shape, but the engine is rough. I was told it hadn't ran in 2 years. The valve cover is gone, the cam is missing, and the lifters are laying on the top. Also, I couldn't seem to shift it to 5th gear, but every other gear worked fine. The guy who owns it is only asking $600 for it, is it worth it? It has a 1500cc I4. He told me that the cam is gone because they had broken a lobe off it from running it too hard, but I'm wondering if the bottom end is blown too..... If it is worth $600, how much do you think it would cost to get it going again?
