Replaced l-ball joint, what about the upper?
Replaced l-ball joint, what about the upper?
First post here. Thanks for any help. I replaced my friend's lower ball joint (it is a '95 Civic, but I'm assuming the suspension is similar in the following years). The ball joint failed, and the tire buckled under the car and ripped the axle apart at the inner CV joint. So I put the new axle and ball joint in yesterday. The upper ball joint looked very good, springy, strong, no bent control arm. You think it's ok to just leave that one alone? I mean, it's kind of late now since it's all done, but they just looked to be in decent shape so I left them and saved money and time. The tie rod by the way was solid as a rock too with just the normal rotating motion of the joint so I didn't replace that either and the car drives great now. He wants me to do the other ball joint cuz he's afraid of tearing the other axle if it fails. Whaddya think, leave the uppers?
Re: Replaced l-ball joint, what about the upper?
I'm one to fix the entire side if the car did something like that just to be on the safe side. As for the other side, I'd go ahead and replace the other LBJ just to get it out of the way. My thought with suspension and steering components is to replace them in pairs.
