Alternator overcharging

'98 civic with low voltage (10.5) when running, traced to loose alternator belt. After tightening, voltage reads 17 - 18 volts when running. I figured the voltage regulator was stuck so I banged on the alternator but it didn't help.
Haynes says replace the alternator when voltage is that high, but says you need to partially remove a drive axle to get to the alternator from below. Autozone says only remove the power steering pump to get to it from above. I haven't replaced an alternator on a civic before so which would be better?

Re: Alternator overcharging

Autozone/Alldata are not always 100% perfect, so you might try going back a couple more years (97 or 96 car) to see if they got the info linked correctly elsewhere.

I'd probably remove the alt just to see if I can sneak it out without removing the axle....... sometimes I try to do things the hard way first.

If the axle needs to be removed to make room to pass an alternator, then it needs removed.

Pray the lower mounting bolt isn't seized in the bracket.....That could really ruin your morning.
