need some assistance with amp and sub
I have a Rockford Fosgate p5002 amp
2-channel car amplifier
125 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (250 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)
500 watts RMS in bridged mode at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)
Stereo or bridged mono output
12dB/octave crossover
I just blew my audiobahn aw121t and I don't want another one of those pieces of crap. I have been looking at the Alpine Type R, however I am confused as to which one to get....either the 2ohm or 4ohm. Being that the amp does 500x1 @ 4 ohm I should get the 2 ohm sub because it is dual voice coil correct?
Thank you in advance for the help!

Now for the hook up....
Make sure that the amplifier can handle what you give it!
x1 4-ohm sub bridged will be fine but hook x2 of these same 4-ohm subs in parralel and your sending the amplifier into 2-ohm state. If the amplifer can handle 2-ohm then fine that good.
That would mean you could hook up x1 DVC 2-ohm sub to the amplifier.
But you couldnt hook up x2 DVC 2-ohm subs as this would send 1-ohm to the amplifier frying it.
just look at the instructions given on the amplifer and what connections can be done, and what the amplifier max's are.
If you hook x2 2-ohm subs in series (like a flashlight) then it will be back to 4-ohm's i believe, so it also depends on whether or not your hooking them up in parralel or series, on a mono-bridged amp.
hope this makes sense?

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
i am still so confused....I just want to hook up 1 12" i already have a custom ported box I just need to know about the 2 ohm vs 4ohm sub
Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
the lower the ohms, the higher the draw from your altenator, etc..
but also the lower the ohm the more bass you can hammer out at
high/low frequencies.

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
It really depends on the sound quality you are looking for. The higher Ohm sub will have better sound quality, whereas the sub with lower ohm's will be better for SPL.
Decide what sound you want to go for, either way you are going to enjoy it and may not even here the sound quality difference.
What I would suggest you do, is since your amp is 4 ohm stable, get the 2 ohm sub and wire the sub up at 4 ohms and youll be good to go. Follow this diagram:

I used to have the Type R as well, until I switched to the Pioneer SPL. Honestly, I wouldnt count it out, it is about the same price as the Type R and I am WAY happier with it.

Hope that doesnt confuse you. If you have any more questions...Id be glad to help.

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
as i said on AIM Jrock.
Type R is a good sub, although when i had the first version of it (Silver cone, red logo) it used to come in SVC configuration. So im not sure how these new ones are really, but i still recommend the Pioneer Premiere over them FTW.
You can use a DVC or a SVC depending how you hook it up.
Image above for a DVC wire dia. which in your case is 250W per coil.
or SVC 500W RMS.
now its up to you to decide what brand.

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
but like yuo said in AIM DVC is not the best idea...you said I should go with a SVC sub...I am wondering why it is safer to do the single voice coil...why?
Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
its not about what is safer....
DVC subs take alot to power > Move!
so i recommended using a SVC over the DVC, thats all...
but i said it was your call!

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
^what are you talking about?!
DVC subs are the way to go. The amp he is getting is MORE than capable of handling a DVC sub. Stick to the the DVC Type R if your set on Alpine. Youll be wasting that amp if you get a SVC sub.
Just look at the specs on the amp..

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
Yeah, pretty much the same thing as the link I posted, just a different case. It even says right in the description its best suited for a 2 ohm DVC sub.
Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
my god... i leave for awhile and i get slammed?
i told him he could use either or....it was his call!
i never said one was unsafe, nor that one could not be used.
it was only my suggestion!
x2 250W RMS coils (DVC) = 500W RMS x1 DVC Sub
x1 500W RMS (SVC)
also with the option in other configurations with SVC subs.
argghh
Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
haha....calm down buddy. I wasnt slamming you....you were obviously confusing the **** out of the guy.
If you thought I was slamming you...I apologize.

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
it is real simple bruh'
Look at the specs from the amp, match which ever one you decide on for a subwoofer.
Ex: " I want to use a DVC subwoofer....."
So, you goto the stereo store and buy a DVC sub that has a 500W RMS (250W RMS x2 coils)
because that amp can do 500W RMS x1 in 2-ohm

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
no it does 500x1 @ 4 ohm
and the original question was "if I did get a dvc sub do I get a dual 2 ohm sub or dual 4 ohm sub?"

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
The P5002 is an excellent way to PUNCH up your sound system! Best suited for driving a 2-ohm DVC subwoofer, a pair of 8-ohm SVC subwoofers, or even four 4-ohm SVC subwoofers. A capacitor is recommended.

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
i dont mean to sound like a dink but this is why i suggested you use a SVC sub, simple to use seeing as you are having a hard time understanding this concept.
with a SVC sub its easier......get a sub w 500W RMS and hook it up + to + and - to -
and wham!
with a DVC sub, the diagram on PG1 shows how to wire the x2 coils in conjuction with the amp to use it in whatever configuration
2, 4, etc OHMs

Re: need some assistance with amp and sub
dude I do understand the concept...I am trying to understand why I have been told dvc puts a harder strain on the amp....why the amp will have to work harder....I am trying to understand why i was told the amp has to work harder to do 250x2 @ 2 ohms then 500x1@4 svc

(see post #8)
