Messed up timing!

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and i have a dilemma. So i have a 2000 Honda Civic Ex (d16y8) manual and I was replacing the head gasket. So my problem is that I took off the distributor without the Engine in TDC. My question is how to do i get the timing back within spec?

Re: Messed up timing!

Remove dist cap.

Insert the end of the dist into the hole, apply GENTLE pressure, spin the rotor until the dist drops all the way into the hole. The drive lugs only engage correctly in one spot (look into the end of the camshaft in the hole, you'll see the slot for the dist drive lugs)

Once the dist is fully inserted, line up the witness marks where the bolts were before.
Timing will be damn close at that point. Final set with a timing light according to the service manual.

Re: Messed up timing!

I'm guessing you're talking about the mechanical timing .If the head is still off it'll be pretty easy as the timing gear on the crank is marked .use that to set the crank at tdc and then put the UP mark on your cam gear at 12 o'clock before you put the head back on .That should get you close enough to align the marks correctly once the heads back on.

Edit: sorry, just reread the op. Missed where you said distributor lol.
