Oil leak

I'm pretty sure this is oil. It's really moist around the entire oil drain pan gasket/seal. But it's also wet higher, so I'm wondering if it's the torque converter. Or maybe the crankshaft pulley seal? I just can't tell.

I took a few pictures which might be helpful:

Thanks for any help.

Re: Oil leak

Get a can of brake clean, hose off all the oil residue and then take it for a quick intown drive and then jack it back up and see if you can tell where the oil is coming from. If you dont see any oil try taking it for a drive on the highway and then check again. Could also be old oil from when the oil filter was removed.

Re: Oil leak

Thanks. That's probably a good way to start tracking it down. I could at least use it to rule out one or more possibilities.

Re: Oil leak

Sounds like it's the oil. but Colin42 has a good suggestion.

Re: Oil leak

Can you tell if the leak is less severe after doing the oil pan?

Something makes me suspect the seal between the engine and transmission, torque-converter, etc. Maybe because they are the most difficult to fix.

Re: Oil leak

I'm betting it's the PCV valve. The engine idle has been low and rough for some time and I suspected the valve. And the rusted metal cannister-looking thing beneath the blue PCV valve in this pic (not my car)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8...FpGQWJtUTRnSkE

is covered with fresh oil. Once the oil filter is removed I bet it will be obvious.

Thanks for the hint!
