Confused idle
Confused idle
I'm new to the Honda game but I'm into every vehicle, which is what's bothering me. My 2000 vtec coupe 5 speed idles fine when started, but once you put in gear and start moving and depress clutch to shift or to stop at light or whatever idle goes up to between 3500-4K rpms. Now this is what is really confusing once I come to a complete stop, as soon as the wheels quit turning idle goes down to normal... please help!!

Your car's engine (D16Y8) does not have a FIT valve. So, start with removing and cleaning the IACV (idle air control valve) . Also, clean the throttle body (remove to clean at your discretion).
Inspect all vacuum lines. Smoke test through vacuum lines even better.

Re: Confused idle
Sixth gens are designed to idle high (but, not 3500 - 4k) on cold start for a few minutes then ilde drops to around 650 to 750 rpms. This happens when in idle or under load. With that out of the way...does the engine behave the way you described way at all temps?

Re: Confused idle
I have gone through and clean iacv and throttle body already. I also replaced my o2 sensors and have done a relearn (one of the many ways I have read to do it) still having the problem it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold motor temp once you are in gear and moving and press the clutch to either stop or change gears it heads towards the 4K mark but once you come to a stop it quits. Now on top of that once you have been driving hard or just long distance and stop sometimes it will idle high or it will idle so low you'll think it's going to stall.
Or a smoke test for vacuum leak?
