Smile 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

Hello, I did a compression test yesterday and now the car doesnt start. I read similar issues with this on here and elsewhere but I am getting spark, fuel and its turning over. firing order is in the right order also, i triple checked it. idk what it could be?

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

If you cranked for a long time the fuel may have washed away your oil film in the cylinders. Have you tried cranking with the accelerator pedal all the way down to disable the injectors? Do this for a few seconds then try again normally.

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

So what's the compression test numbers?
Why did you check this in the first place?

How much spark is there, will it jump a 10mm air gap?

i did a compression test cause i suspect it was a bad head gasket or water pump, wanted to see if it was the HG.
im not sure.. i know theres a spark. im gonna try replace the dizzy and see if that works. thats all i can think of thats wrong with it. low spark?

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

Compression test usually can't find a leaking head gasket on these engines, and your numbers dropping as the test goes on makes me think the battery may have been getting weaker as you continued testing.
IF cranking RPM did not decrease during the testing, then you may have issues to deal with. Did it ever set misfire codes?

Find the overheating common causes sticky thread, in the first post is a bunch of info and one video showing how I prove one of these leaking from the combustion chamber to the cooling system.

Now that it won't start, have you checked if the spark plugs are wet with fuel? (flooded)

A weak coil may be able to deliver enough spark to jump a spark plug gap in open air (outside the engine), but not able to deliver enough voltage to jump the same gap during a compression stroke inside the engine. A good coil should be able to make a spark jump at least 10mm air gap outside the engine.

I tried to jump start earlier today and nothing and the spark plugs appear to be dry still.. didnt have any misfiring codes also.. hmm

Did you unclip the wiring harness from the distributor before testing compression?

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

When doing a compression test you are supposed to hold the gas pedal at wide open throttle. This turns off the injectors and prevents flooding the engine. Did you do this?

Have you tried using starter fluid spray in the TB?
Try holding the gas pedal all the way down while you crank it. I had to do that after a head gasket replacement. I held it down for what seemed like ten seconds while cranking and it finally turned over. I then turned it off, let off the pedal, put in position 2 until CEL light went off/ fuel pump primes and it started right up..no issues since.

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

I notice after I crank it, I dont see no fuel in the piston. I know the fuel pump is working(heard it also took off the line/cranked it and gas comes out) I sprayed some starter fluid in the TB at first.. and I did spray directly into the pistons and put the spark plugs back and that didnt do nothing. 2?

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

so heres a recap on what i know.. did a compression test, dont start after, get spark (also replaced the dizzy), fuel comes out of the fuel line but its not going into the piston. fuses are all good and wires are in the right order.

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

Possible fuel injection (main) relay issue?: Under hood fuse #44 http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/honda/1.6L/under-hood-fuse-relay-box
Part# W0133-1623553

Seems like you've ruled out fuel (other than inectors) and spark so is it getting air? Is the throttle body flap opening during cranking? Do you have someone that can push the gas pedal while you check the throttle body flap? Maybe the throttle cable snapped where you can't see it and the throttle flap is stuck closed.

Makes no sense that it wouldn't start after doing a compression test. Seems like incorrect firing order would be the first suspect and you said you checked it and it is correct.

Maybe this helps:

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

Also use the "test light" seen in Turd Ferguson's post and see if you get signal to the injectors when cranking.

there is no way all four would fail at once, but there is a chance that something was unplugged/burnt out causing the injectors to not receive a signal to fire.

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

Got fault codes?
Got data list?

Open the throttle and spray a bit of carb and throttle cleaner into the throttle body and see if the engine will fire on that (alternate fuel source) that would confirm a lean or lack of fuel situation.

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

If I can find someone with a light test machine ill try that.. only error code I got was a knock sensor code a long time ago.. I tried spraying into the TB and also ahain in the piston directly and it didnt help one bit

Re: 98 civic ex wont start after compression test

I was there 4 years ago, enjoyed it thoroughly.

Believe me, good weather is a good thing! Here in the rust belt, we get a winter with snow, which is fun when you're younger, less so as time goes on for many reasons. I actually looked into transferring with my employer at the time, but it soon became apparent it would never happen because there is a big demand to go there, and as a result wages are lower than on the mainland, despite the higher cost of living.

Damn, there's no emoji for the shaka sign. You'll just have to imagine I'm doing it
