Bubbling coolant
Bubbling coolant
Please help! OK so I have checked the oil and there is no coolant mixing with it. The car does not over heat stays right below the middle. But now today even after the car runs for 15 minutes it acts like it's still cold and idles high and the temp guage doesn't move a hair and still coolant bubbling. It's a 98 civic d16y7 Any idea on why the coolant is bubbling? Pleaseeee help

Re: Bubbling coolant
Tighter tolerances means 'even more finicky'.
As far as head gaskets are concerned, the newer stuff is more robust than older, I believe due to the use of TTY fasteners in newer engines.

Look up Subaru and head gaskets. I don't think they have as much market share as Honda or Toyota, but they sure have had a lot of head gasket issues.
In the 90s, they had a 2.2L SOHC horizontally opposed (HO) engine and a 2.5L DOHC HO engine. The 2.2L engine has been the most reliable, almost bulletproof. It did not suffer from head gasket issues like the 2.5L engine did, which was notorious for it. The solution for many people keeping these older cars going, was to replace a 2.5L engine with a blown head gasket with a 2.2L engine. I used to have a '91 Legacy with a 2.2 in it, it was a front wheel drive version (AWD was optional at the time)
Really miss that car. Longitudinal mount engine, and because of the HO design, the engine doesn't take up much height so doing oil change was easy, didn't even have to raise the car.
After all that, what did Subaru do? Phase out the 2.2 of course...

Re: Bubbling coolant
Thanks Ezone. I have an upcoming (used) cylinder head replacement on my son's '07 Mazda 3. We haven't removed the current head yet but, lifter/tappet/camshaft follower(s) is making metallic thumping noise. Also, unplugged each coil pack individually and 4th cylinder did not run as rough as the others. I plan to do another dry/wet compression test but, my hunch is leaky valves.
