Speedometer dropping and surging, and...

Today out of nowhere, my 2000 civic (150K) acted up. The speedometer needle was dropping to zero, the coming back up to the 40 mph i was doing. At stop lights, the tranny would hang then surge on acceleration. I was close to home so got back and visually checked the obvious ( fluid level, etc) but found nothing. Any one know what's going on here?
Thanks, John

See if you have codes first. (check engine light)
Have codes read.
Note all of the code numbers (in the standard OBD2 "Pxxxx" format), report them here.

Got a scanner of your own? Drive and watch VSS value and compare to the speedo reading, see if they both quit at the same time or not.

Is the speedo still working now? Working intermittently? Completely dead?

Possible: VSS failing randomly, wires chafing against a ground, rodent gnawing on wires damage, blown fuse, stuff like that... If a fuse blows it can cause a bunch of codes, so all results are important to know.

Would that most likely be the wiring harness scraping located behind the intake manifold?
