Low compression/misfire in 00 civic
Low compression/misfire in 00 civic
Hey I just picked up a 2000 civic, it came with a misfire, and my mechanic attached a computer to the engine and told me there was zero compression in cylinder 4 and low compression in the rest of the cylinders. He told me it wouldnt be worth it to try and fix it, because it probably needs a full rebuild, and that I should buy a new engine. I dont want to spend the money on a new engine, is there any way I can fix this without a full rebuild, I'd really like my car on the road. I read online about custom exhaust giving a car no backpressure, and that it blows the valves out. Can anyone help me out with this?

I'm gonna guess it's due to a valve problem. Got correct valve clearance adjustment? Burned valve?
SO maybe the head needs to come off to do a valve job. Is the car worth the expense of this work? Throw in a timing belt too, since it's halfway apart for this.
Then more questions, such as ...Got a ton of miles? Crappy air filter? Does it burn oil? Is there any reason not to pull the pistons out and at least rering it while the head is off? Need bearings while it's apart too?
Is the car still worth it?
Then add up these expenses, and compare to the prices for getting a used engine, putting fresh timing belt and seals in it, and drop it in the car.
Or go completely through the used engine before dropping it in the car.
You can find used engines fairly cheap, but you never really know what you are getting as far as how its life has been and what sort of care it's had.

Re: Low compression/misfire in 00 civic
I bought the car because It was sold to me for 1/3 of the price because of the engine problem, plus the body is immaculate. I'm going to pull the head off with a friend and see what's wrong, if it's too expensive to fix I'm going to get a B18a1 off a guy I've been talking to. It has a cold air intake, burns a little oil, and it has 195k miles, but I've heard hondas are good for 400k, depending on the care of the car.

Sounds like that one probably has ring problems too.
The crummy filters that most use let a ton of dirt through.
