2002 honda civic ex issue please help

I am new to this site. I own a 2002 Honda civic ex I was driving it to work the other day when I got a bad hissing sound it was pretty loud, lost power going up a smaller hill, I thought it was a exhaust leak if I let off the throttle it would stop and only make the loud hissing noise when I stepped on the throttle, when I took it out of gear the car died and have not been able to start it again. it had a p0420 code and a p0131 code on it. things I have tried already I replaced the fuel pump, took the cat off, and checked for stark, nothing fixed this yet, I am going to check compression today to see if the timing is good, has anyone had this issue before? the engine is the SOCH 1.7 thanks!!!

Even if you have compression, you should still inspect the physical cam/crank timing marks to make sure it didn't jump time. The computer can and will shut it down if it jumps time past a certain number of teeth.

Does the check engine light come on when you turn the key on? (Yes- Main relay #1 is ok.)

Can you hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds when you turn the key on? Gotta have fan and radio turned off, the fuel pumps are real quiet. (Yes-Main relay #2/Pump relay is ok.)

If yes to both of those, I might pull the upper timing cover and inspect cam/crank timing.

How would I check the timing just pulling the upper cover?

I'd say to read up on how to replace a timing belt on one of these cars 01-05 with a 1.7 engine, pay particular attention to the timing belt installation steps and timing mark identification and alignment. Once you understand the hows and whys of the job, you might better understand how to inspect yours.

There's some DIY threads on it here in these forums, do a search?

A good service manual would be of great help if you need better information.
