Timing belt replacement, oil pump too?
Timing belt replacement, oil pump too?
I have been reading about the timing belt replacement because I am needing to replace my water pump. I have seen some coolant drips below the water pump and want to get it fixed before it goes out in the heat of summer. I plan on replacing the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, crank seal, cam seal, a/c, alternator, and p/s belts. I had also planned on replacing the oil pan gasket since I will be this far into it and it seems to have a small leak. Someone else said something about replacing the oil pump too or at least the oil pump gasket? I have a 1999 civic ex with the D16Y8 engine. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to do with the oil pump and also is there anything else I should be doing as well since I will have everything apart anyways? Thanks for the thoughts!

Re: Timing belt replacement, oil pump too?
The oil pump itself isn't a usual problem, but it's rubber gaskets can seep or leak after a ton of miles.
The oil pan has to come off to get the pump off so this would be the time to do it if you are going to do it.

O ring #20 between the pump and block, dipstick tube seal #19, and you probably want to get the gasket #4 for the pickup tube. Hondabond/Permatex UltraGray (IMO) for the rest of the mating surfaces between pump and block.

Re: Timing belt replacement, oil pump too?
There are some good videos on youtube with step by step instructions. There is also a write up in the DIY section of this forum. Hope this helps. I have watched most of the videos on youtube and they seem to give pretty much the same info but some are more thorough on certain parts than others. That is where I have started. If anyone else has a guide they think is the best then please post for the rest of us to follow here. Thanks!

Ezone,
You said dipstick tube #18, but I think that would be #19. Would I need 18 as well though? also, Is this an external oil pump? What is the need for #18? It looks like a cam or crank seal. Also, can you explain the need to replace the oil pump seals. If it is external then I can understand. If not, then I don't get why. What is the oil pump driven by? Thanks.

Typo edited. Thanks.
You said earlier you were already planning on getting the front cam and front crank seals, so I didn't include it a second time.
Um.....it's not inside the oil pan so I'll guess it could be considered external.
That's what we call the front crank seal. Also might be called an oil pump seal? You already said you were getting it.
You replace gaskets whenever you remove components. SOP.
And, your whole thread seemed to revolve around the pump:

External.
Typically driven by 'flats' on the nose of the crankshaft.
