96 Civic - tach stops working and then engine stumbles and dies
Hello,
Newb here. My daughters 96 Civic EX died on her the other day while driving on the freeway. Would crank and refine but ran poorly. I checked the timing belt and it looks good, marks still lined up. I checked for spark and had none. I replaced the distributor and after clearing out a flooded engine and replacing the plugs, I still have an issue. The engine will fire. While sitting behind the wheel, I noticed that the tach needle suddenly dropped to zero. Moments later, the engine began to. Run poorly, stumbling and will not accelerate if I try to rev the engine. After a few seconds, it will die. If I restart it, it will refire, but it seems like it runs worse, the warmer the engine gets. I have checked the fuel pressure. It is 34-36 psi when running and stays the same after it begins to stumble. I have changed the main relay and tried several ICU's before I changed the entire distributor. I have cleaned grounds and I have checked voltage at the blk/yel wire at the dist. 13.8V when running (good or bad).
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking ECU or crank/ cam sensor? I wiggles the key while it was acting up, trying to eliminate the ignition switch. No change.
