Re: 1998 civic speedo problems
Is there a P0500 or P0501 code stored?
Read the Vehicle Speed on a scanner data list as you drive. Is it displaying accurate speed?
Beat on the dash over the gauges as you drive. Does the speedo come back to life?

Re: 1998 civic speedo problems
Somewhat related: My little red 98 Civic LX with 238K miles doesn't like the rain. I drove it in the rain on Monday and, after 20 minutes, the Check Engine Light came on and started pulsing, RPM was erratic, and the speedometer completely died (went to zero and stayed there).
Car starts fine, runs rough, but works, all the while with the Check Engine Light pulsating (not blinking, but pulsing). As the rain went away and I drove it again Tuesday, it got a bit better. The pulsing was not as noticeable, and the speedometer started showing signs of life (moving erratically and randomly all over the dial). No mechanics available (it's Christmas). I plan to drive it tomorrow to a parking lot near my mechanic (40 miles away). No clue what's going on, but I'm guessing it's "electrical"
Will update when I figure it out.
Merry Christmas
