97 Honda Civic EX Engine issue

I am interested in buying a '97 Civic with 98k Miles. It starts right up and transmission shifts into gear (automatic) but the engine knocks loudly on start up but then it'll quiet down after a minute. It'll go forward but it has no power and you can only go like up to 20mph. D16Y8 motor. Any ideas on what it could be? best case and worst case? I don't mind putting in the work but I don't want to completely rebuild the engine either.

Thanks.

Sounds like a disaster to me.
Plan on buying an engine and transmission (minimum) if you want the car.

EDIT: Those engines do tend to rattle when cold, but since I have no way of evaluating it from here I'd say to plan for the worst.

That's cold for an engine.
Anything less than operating temperature is cold for an engine.

Cracked exhaust manifold can make a lot of noise until it heats up.
