Rare Issue: Reverse works but not coordinated with shifter
Rare Issue: Reverse works but not coordinated with shifter
Problem:
Recently my 1997 Civic DX 2door automatic will not "read" reverse. When placed in the reverse position, the red R lights up on the dashboard however the reverse is not operational as if the car was still in neutral. Halfway between reverse and park, the actual reverse gear will physically work, however the dash will be completely dark.
Steps already taken:
-Oil Change
-Transmission fluid flush and changed
-Main relay replaced
-All dash lights replaced
-Took apart the shifter and cleaned all the contacts
-Unplugged battery for 20 min
-checked the break light switch and its working
This car is a champion and everything else is in great condition. It drives just fine on D3 or D4 and even reverses smoothly once the gear is physically activated. I have the heart of a mechanic so I just cant settle with "replace the transmission" which is what 95% of common people say including 2 "mechanics" I have shown it to, I am reaching out to the true mechanics who might know a solution to this rare problem as I have searched forums deeply for this issue and have not come up with much. This issue has been happening for the past 2 months however it has ran smooth and awesomely during its whole life of course with regular maintenance. Both mechanics I showed it to didnt even pop the hood and wanted to recommend I change the transmission within 60 seconds of asking my question.
My ideas in progress:
-The computer has a burnt out joint or component and needs soldering/replacement?
-The transmission shift solenoid needs replacing (looks like two large capacitors)

Sounds like the selector cable may need adjusted, or the range switch may need adjusted (assuming the cable end linkage at the trans isn't loose or worn).
Here's a bulletin that deals with an interlock problem, but it covers some cable adjustment too: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...56343320,d.b2I
