98 civic..Crank/no start issue

I have a 98 Civic CX (hatch). It drove fine last thursday, but come friday morning, it would crank, but not start. First thing I did was clean the corrosion off the positive battery terminal, but that didn't do anything. Got advice from family and friends and was advised to replace the fuel pump (we couldn't hear the old one whirring). Replaced the pump and it seems to work fine; whirs when I turn the key to ON, and then there's a loud "CLICK" that comes from the front of the car, just one click, though (is that the starter or the fuel injection system?). Replaced fuel filter and spark plugs and still cranks, but will not start. Any ideas?

I'm VERY new to this. Just a heads up. My car knowledge is very limited.

I keep being told to check for spark, but I have no idea how to do it. Do I take the boot off and hold it near a metal surface, or do I take the plug cover off and hold it near a metal surface?
