Whats more common, cracked head or block?

My car has been overheating for awhile now, I replaced the Headgasket and still overheats.

I have removed the thermostat. The car only overheats when I drive it. It holds steady while idle. Coolant and oil doesn't seem contaminated, I do notice small bubbles rising from the radiator cap opening.

so what is more common, a cracked head or a cracked block? I hate to replace both.

Did you check to see if the head had warped when you replaced the HG?

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but I am about to pull it off again. How do I check?

Head warped from the overheat. A head gasket can't seal against a curved surface. Send the head to a reputable machine shop, they will tell you what needs done and how much to do it.

I see, if it is still a leaky head, a compression test should show low compression?

Nope.

Not necessarily. The head gasket would have to have a F'n HUGE leak to lose compression.

There are MANY different ways a head gasket can fail.

Those would be excellent numbers for a Model T or a Flathead Ford. Are you testing one of those?

You posted in a Civic forum, so I guess not. Got any helpful info about your car?
Use common sense here, all cars are NOT the same.
Year, model, engine, # of doors, country, etc.

Most Honda engines will reach 180-220psi if the engine is proper, your test equipment is accurate, and you do the test correctly.

1998 D16y7 DX USDM.

I figured the numbers were a tad low, I was really more concerned with fluctuations between cylinders. I'll keep you guys updated.

Re: Whats more common, cracked head or block?

older civic engines are around 128psi per cylinder for the lower hp models. and yeah, always have the head checked for warpage before reinstalling. i can almost guarantee it will need resurfacing even if you did not overheat (something caused the gasket to blow afterall). there is no way a compression test will show a small leak. if you have bubbles in coolant and are losing coolant from burning in the engine, everything has to come apart again.
