Alternator help!!

My 2000 honda civic ex wasnt starting so my friend jumped it for me and it worked for 10 min. I turned off the car and tried to start the car and it isnt starting again so we think it is the alternator. I dont know which alternator to get for my car...I have a 10in kicker solo baric l5 sub with an eclipse xa5000amp. Any suggestions of alternators to get? Help me please!!!! I want to start working on my car but this is holding me back...

First off it may not be your alt thats the problem. If you jumped it and it ran fine then I would say its not. You need to jump it again and read the voltage at the battery. Should be 14.1v or close to it.

Sounds more like it is a bad battery to me than alt. Have you been sitting with the stereo on with out the car running. This can kill a battery in a honda really quick.

Re: Alternator help!!

Yea autozone can check it for you and then you would know either way.

If your going to run a stereo system an optima yellow top is a good battery to use for it. They make one that fits in the honda factory location. Had one in mine for 5 years and never had an issue with it.

If you can't afford one of those just get a good autozone battery thats got a 5 year coverage on it.

If your able to drive it down to autozone once its jumped then its not your alt because with a bad alt you wont be charging the electrics and eventually the car will die out because of no spark or power to the ecu.

Re: Alternator help!!

Yea it will. All stereo systems are a draw on the electrical system if you don't have a 2nd battery to run them. But even with a 2nd that puts stress on your Alt. The best set up for a big system is its own batteries and a 2nd alt just for those.

Re: Alternator help!!

Just get one of Autozone's Duralast batteries. That will do the job just fine for a few years.

Re: Alternator help!!

Another suggestion is to just double check to make sure your amp is shutting off when you turn off the car. Otherwise it is a constant drain on your battery. Get it checked and let us know what happens

600 will be a better one to go with.

To check the amp you'll need an ohm meter or test light. Once you turn the car off see if there is still voltage at the + terminal on the amp. This should have no voltage one the car is off.

Re: Alternator help!!

Any auto place has"cheap" batteries however you get what you pay for. Go to walmart or something they are cheapish in price. Your amp might have a light that comes on if not then do the abovementioned test oh and a mulitmeter does no cost much and comes in handy.

Re: Alternator help!!

honda dealer has very nice batteries (interstate brand with honda sticker) for around $100 and well worth it. group51 with 500cca.
