Do I need a new Ignition Switch? Im stuck!
Do I need a new Ignition Switch? Im stuck!
Hey everyone. Im new here and have a quick question. Last week I bought a 98 Honda Civic EX coupe from a friend. Vin code 6. d16 with the 5spd. fairly clean but doesnt run. Hasnt ran in almost a year, just sat on the side of the road. He lost the key, so when I towed it up here I took the title in to the dealer and they cut me a new one. It goes in the ignition and you hear the "beep" but it refuses to turn. My steering wheel is locked and because I cant turn the key I cant unlock the steering wheel to move the car around my shop. I had another one cut, and then made a copy if it at the hardware store and it still wont turn. Question: Is there any way I can bypass the ignition so I can at least unlock the steering wheel so I can turn the car and push it where I need it to go? I saw on ebay there are so re-keying kits for EVERYTHING but Im hoping there is a trick to getting the ignition "unstuck"? Once I get that stupid problem out of the way then I can work on getting it up and running lol Thanks again for reading this book and let me know if you have any ideas.
Re: Do I need a new Ignition Switch? Im stuck!
One more thing. If there is anyone around the Akron/Cleveland, Ohio area Im looking for a d16 engine for this car. Previous owner took it to his mechanic after throwing a million parts at it and the mechanic said it has no compression in cyliner one. 196k on it. So I would rather find a running d16 to drop into it instead of trying to fix this one. I dont care about miles, just want it to run. Thanks again.

Having the exact same problem. I bought car with lost key. After having one made it wouldn't start. I just replaced the ignition switch today (fairly easy) but now it only cranks and won't start. did you ever figure anything out?

I just ended up replacing the entire ignition switch assembly for one from RockAuto, it came with keys and all the wiring for around $60 bucks. Easy to install and it starts great now.

got to change that. Did you figure this out yet? I was going to say if its cranking now but not starting the ignition switch would not be the problem as it is doing its job Thread
