Climate controls not switching properly

I'm having a problem with the climate control in my '96. The fan speed and temperature selector work fine, but the output selection is not proper. What I select with the buttons is not what comes out. See the chart ...

control panel ... actual output
(buttons from left to right)

dash ... defrost and dash (defrost is weak, center dash vent no output)
dash and floor ... dash and floor
floor ... dash and floor
floor and defrost ... dash and floor (center dash vent weak output)
defrost ... dash and floor + a/c (center dash output is strong)

I have removed the stereo and climate assembly to check for anything obvious, like broken wires and parts, but nothing is visible. I have noticed that there is one 2-prong connector under the assembly that is screwed up and not attached to anything (black connector, one black wire and one yellow with green stripe). Some hack-artist kid had this car before me and did a poor job wiring. I can't find where this connector attaches to. Is it even related?

I'm new to Honda's, but not wrenching. I am still researching and learning about this system. I have never had issues with climate controls in past vehicles, so any guidance on what I should be checking would be appreciated. PATIA!

EDIT - according to a manual I just found (thanks MelJ!) the yellow/grn stripe connector should be an Acc(essory). I think the stray connector may have gone to the (missing) lighter socket. Can any confirm?
