2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

I searched the forum and even looked at the service manual sheets on the DIY.

Just went outside with a flashlight and my headlight only has the horizonal adjustment. the pictures for the 99-00 model on the service manual sheets in DIY show the vertical one being able to be accessed through a hole next to one of the headlight bolts. My headlight doesnt have anything like that.

Here is a picture I found and it looks extremely similar if not the exact same back view of my headlight of what I can see of it with a flashlight.

Please let me know if anyone can help..

Thanks so much

look at it during the daytime, its kind of hard to locate with a flashligt and adjusting them in a pain in the butt. Adjusting the headlights is one of the few things that gm got right, well that and automatic transmissions.

you should be able to reach it with screwdriver. and if you only have one gear, its for the vertical. most lights do not have horizontal.

i notice from service manual page that it ur saying if i only have one gear then it must be vertical. but i believe that gear has the two screws like the picture on manual shows. the one screw and then the other one that the manual shows you get to from top of the gear thingy.

i dont understand why i only have the one gear that is closest to the left bottom on the back of the headlight

I'm not sure. The brand and number on the driver side headlight is Honda. Stanley. R7660L

I just took another look hoping the one adjuster that is on it is the vertical adjuster and i'm upset to find out it seems like the horizontal indicator.

I even have a picture of the gear.

Re: 2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

the rusted gear is the vertical, and you stick a screwdriver in the plastic guide channel above it to turn the gear. the horizontal will be much harder to reach and you need a very long screwdriver to go that far down at the middle edge. due to horizontal aim not needing to ever be adjusted (unless rare cases if you get in an accident and mess up the front end to where the beam is pointing left or right). most newer headlamps do not even have a horizontal adjustment.

If the rusted one is the vertical iit seems connected to the other gear that says L and R. U can even se that in the picture I took. Is this right?

Re: 2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

I am going to try within the next few days when I get time in between both jobs. The only thing is I know your saying you believe the rusted gear is the vertical gear but I'm confused by that because that gear is like connected to the other gear next to it and it says L | R which to me seems like the horizontal gear?

Re: 2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

According to the honda service manual papers i found on honda-tech.com the two gears right next to eachother are definetly for the horizontal adjustment.

THis is a crop of the service manual part for my car. 2000 civic. they say this is the vertical adjustment gear but I do find something at this point/spot on my headlight but it is a bolt, seems to have some teeth on it but no way to get a screwdriver in there to adjust it. only a wrench to move bolt but its SOOOO hard to get in their to adjust it and when i did move it as much as i could it didnt seem to move anything at all.

Re: 2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

So i finally figured it out. I can get to the vertical gear with a screwdriver on a slant. question is if i want to point them up more i turn screwdriver to left or right?

I moved them both to the right alot but i was looking inside headlight as i was moving the gear? i could'nt see anything moving? what is suppose to move inside the headlight?

Re: 2000 honda civic ex 4dr adjusting headlights vertically

you have to park 25 ft in front of a white wall in order to aim properly. cover one side while adjusting the other. you can see which way they move when turning the gear.
