Looking at a civic

Hello, new to this form. I currently own a '97 ford F-350 diesel that I have been using as my daily driver (100 miles round trip to my new job location). I'm looking to get a 96-2000ish civic.

I'm very mechanically inclined, but the majority of my expense is with diesel engines and hydraulic systems.

What are some of the trouble areas I should be aware of? Looking to get a 5speed, probably with over 100k on the clock. needs to be pretty reliable because I'm going to have it on the highway at 85+mph every day. Not looking to mod it at all, maybe an air intake, some e3 plugs and synthetic oil. Needs to be reliable, not a race-car.

How does a civic handle snow? I'm used to driving my 1-ton truck around in 2wd with no weight in the bed, so i don't mind slipping and sliding a bit.

Let me know what your thoughts are, thanks

Re: Looking at a civic

I have about 137k on my Civic. The only major thing I've had to replace were the CV axles. The rear sway bar links broke, but the Honda OEM ones are garbage, and the same for the generation after mine. If you live in an area where they salt the roads, this shouldn't really come as a surprise. Depending on where you live, they can be a theft magnet as well. I love my car. Coupled with a 5 Speed, it's a blast to drive. I don't race, but the car has character for what it is and has made me a Honda fanboy. You also should look out to see if it's been modded in any way. I got lucky and found my car with just an intake and a new CD deck. Car handles pretty well in the snow, especially with good snow tires.

Ok great. thanks for the input! What about things like timing belts? do those typically go/should be replaced around 100k?

I'm in MA and work at a secure, gated facility, so theft isn't an issue luckily.

. How did I forget that?! Yeah. If it's got over 100k, replace the TB/WP. Most owners don't ever do that. I had mine changed around 115k. It was probably in good shape, but better to be safe than sorry.
