Clutch is going bad so you need a new one. 130k miles is bout that time for a clutch.

Don't cheap out on a clutch. At least get something built to OEM specifications, or a Stage 1. If the car stalls when you let off the clutch, you might just need to have it adjusted. I mean.. its grabbing, its stalling your car... hmm... are you sure you know how to drive manual?

I hate the grind that these cars have when shifting into reverse. My 2001 Civic Si Coupe always grinds unless you are completely stopped and shift. If you are creeping in reverse even the slightest it will grind should you try to engage the gear. My BMW doesn't do that.

Duh, I'm an idiot. Yes, see if it's adjusted right and check for leaks (usually happen at the slave cylinder or master cylinder).

Ugh. Such a terrible noise. I always make sure I floor that sucker.

Reverse is straight cut in our manual gearboxes. You need that idler gear to slide in to get it to work, but there can't be any motion, which is why you get that nasty noise.

Re: Help me clutch problems

You could try flooring the throttle in 3rd at a low speed. If the tach rises like crazy but no speed, it's more than likely toast.

Hey, about tthat reverse gear; I am careful about stopping all the way b4 reverse gear, but it still grinds. I mean my car is a 00' Civic with like 140k miles. Will getting a new clutch solve the grind?

If it doesn't grind in any of the foreward gears, it doesn't sound like a clutch. Syncros maybe? I don't know enough about these 5 speeds to say, its just odd that you have to be completely stopped to shift into reverse.

Two externally cut gears. You need them both to go in reverse. But you have an issue because they are turning in another direction. That's where the idler gear comes in between them(2 gears turning clockwise. The idler gear turns CCW). If you get that in between these 2 gears, they rotate in the opposite direction(reverse). I THINK. I can't remember the entire process off the top of my head. That's why if the car is moving, you get that grind. I also don't think reverse is synchronized. Anybody wanna help me with this explanation?

Ahh, well if reverse isn't synchronized that could explain it. Whatever, just be fully stopped when shifting into reverse, thats not too difficult.

I don't know about you guys, but hearing gears grind gives me the same facial expression as getting kicked in the *****

You are correct on the no synchronizer in the reverse gear though there are some cars that have it but not civics. And for reverse like the said there are 2 gears going in opposite directions so its going to be hard to get into. Another thing is hold the clutch in and get in reverse then let off. When you push in the clutch pedal the throw out bearing presses on the pressure plate which causes the clutch and flywheel to stop. When this happens all the gears stop spinning as well on the input shaft. When all this happens it is alot easier to get it in reverse while it is hard when trying to when everything is not stopped and going in different directions.
