Interesting radio dilemma
Interesting radio dilemma
I've done some searching and I haven't seen many results for this. I guess maybe people don't have the same problem. I installed a Sony Explode head unit into a friends 2001 Civic. The only problem is that the radio stations don't pick up very well while it sits in the spot. Like if I pull it out and tilt it just the slightest bit it works perfectly fine, but if I slide it back so it sits flush with the rest of the car it becomes staticy and doesn't pick up stations very well. I was wondering if anybody else had any problems similar to this, and what y'all did (if anything) to fix it.
Also I switched around HU's and tried my sony in her car and her sony in my car, they both work fine in my car, but not in hers. I don't know whats up.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
I had that issue also, but with my Alpine. I think it may just be a bad antenna connection. I wound up making sure to really push the two ends of the antenna wire together and wrapping the connection with some electrical tape and its been working fine for a few months now.
Re: Interesting radio dilemma
Haha I kind of like the 50cent idea lol.
what do you mean by antenna connections? The wire with the headphone looking thing on the end of it? Or is there something else that should be connected? Like a colored wire?

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
The sony deck (likely) has three extra blue wires on it. A dark blue/white for amp turn on, a dark blue for antenna turn on, and a light blue for muting or something like that.
Try hooking the dark blue antenna turn on wire from the sony harness up to the yellow/green wire in the honda harness. That should turn on the antenna amplifier.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
Well the Sony HU only has two blue extra wires, they both have a positive charge coming from them, IE to turn something on like an amp (as one if for the amp) and there is also an orange wire left over, which is for the illumination. So I should take the blue wire with the black stripe or w/e and hook it up to the yellow/green honda wire?

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
i am pretty sure sedans have it too, or you would barely get any fm reception, not enough to even listen to radio, mostly static. all those window glass antennas need a booster its just builtin somewhere else. its not a power antenna per-say, but you still need to wire it like one.
Re: Interesting radio dilemma
The coupes have an antenna amplifier, the sedans do not. It looks like the Si has the turn on wire for it but it isn't the same as the coupe. I have no idea as to the reasoning behind it all. Feel free to take a look at the wiring if you like.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
well when i had the power antenna wire disconnected in my sedan i got barely AM reception, almost no FM. hooked it up and the FM sounds like a cd pretty much. so dik, there has to be something. and im not talking about the actual antenna plug, i mean the wire in the harness for power antenna.
ps. honda also has an electrical manual, i got mine off ebay and its just as worth it as the huge service manual.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
The multiple antenna amplifier applications has confused me for a while, I'm wondering if maybe you're right and some sedans do have it.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
i'm also interested in this as my radio reception sucks compared to the stock HU. i've got XM now, so it's not a big deal, but i'd still like better radio reception when i need it.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
i thought they were merging no? i dont care for sat radio, i think FM has better quality and really having tried both i got tired of the programming in a week. and the quality was terrible like 56kbps mp3. i installed that deck a while ago, not sure but on the deck it had a wire labeled power ant. and i hooked it to a matching wire in the stock harness. idk, maybe it didnt lead anywhere.but reception is amazing for the most part. also i live in farm land so theres no buildings to block signal. but it sounds really good, i just dont listen to radio so it doesnt matter anyway. i have an alpine deck too which i think is one of the better tuners. my old pioneer 940 didnt do as well.

Re: Interesting radio dilemma
finally someone believes me lol. everyone else is like what sat radio the quality is so good bla bla. trying to justify the cost they pay for crap. idk, maybe, just maybe on a stock crappy system you might not be able to hear the difference. i dont have a great system either but yea it still noticable.
Re: Interesting radio dilemma
personally i like my XM, but i also live in the middle of nowhere and only get two radio stations. country and mexican. so XM is really good for me. but i thougth i heard someone talking about an antenna booster in the vics in the c pillar. popped a panel out and it was right there. no?
