mounting amps, cooling??

hey guys, newaiz in an attempt to regain some trunk space, i was thinking of mounting my amps like...sorta under the trunk floor. i dont really know ohw to explain it, but it wud sorta be under the wooden thing that u put over the spare tire well. but if i did that, wud it be a bad place to put my amps? cuz if itz in that tight space, wud it just overheat like crazy or wud it be fine? thanks guys

First of all, what brand amps do you have? Amps have fins on their heatsinks so that the heat can leave the amp, but if you trap that air under the floor, it may not be good. If you have like a Rockwood, Bazooka, (or any other cheap amps) you could have a big problem. It also depends on how hard you are running your amps. A small fan may be enough to overcome this situation but before I go on ANY further, please let me know what you have in your car and I can be more specific to your situation...

i agree, if you have amplifiers that are prone to heat, like entry level hifonics amplifiers or earthquake amplifiers, then it could be a potential problem.

should be fine if yrou amplifiers arent prone to heat, but tbone is right, need amp info and how your gonna be driving them if you arent aware of any heat issues.

for example, the earthquake amplifier i was jsut talking about might be fine runnign yrou front speakers in stereo. put it ion a subwoofer, and suddenly youve got a huge heat problem!

Just out of curiousity, I have a HiFonics ZX6000 and when im using to it push my JL Audio XR Comp. Set, that amp gets freaken hot, too hot to even touch. Is there anyway to add some fans in it or something to help with heat dissipation?

how muchg power are you running to your components? Components don't normally present a problem for amplifiers, its not a good sign that it runs so hot. Is it a class A/B? D? The bias settings may be messed up..which is something you don't have control over. Does it go into thermal protection or just get really hot? A fan will help BUT if your amp doesn't shut off, I'm sure the engineers who designed it (with their slanted eyes {not to offend ANYONE in here but HYFONICS are all made in China or Korea] know the safe operating temp of the output devices. I'd say leave it alone...like whiterabbit said in some post i read tonite "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but i get a funny feeling he isn't the original author of that quote, lol.

zsk, my buddy bought that amp as well, running kodas and infinity perfects. he has mass heat problems as well, he tells me he cant run it for more than 20 minutes before it starts to get really hot. i dont remember if he said it goes into protection.

but we plan to combat that by building an amp rack for it that conforms to the Basic Electronics site design for a fanned amp rack.

we wont be building it till next fall, however, so if you wanna try it out first and let us know how it worked, that would be great too!

Hey i am thinking about doing the same idea basically. Putting the amp next to the spare. I am running a Kicker Ix2302, i never really had heat problems with it b4 but under the floor worries me a lil. It will be powering an infinty kappa perfect 10" 10.1 or an infinty kappa perfect 10" dvq....have not decided which sub to get. What yall think? Thanks!

depends on how big of abox your gonna run. DVC will work in a prefab box, DVQ will work in ANY box, period. period. .35 cubes to freeair.

its all up there, dude! ^^^^

dvq will probably cost you more, but will work in any box you can imagine.

dvc is liek any other woofer, has ideal box parameters, but im guessing is cheaper.

they shoudl both sound the same
