Hey everyone, apparantly that thing that caused my amp to smoke was a transistor, im sure many of you already knew. Well, I contacted HiFonics today and they told me that even though my amp still works, chances are the other two transistors will give out since they all aren't functioning. I don't want to send it in because it will take too long to get it back, and I have no other amp to run my component set off of. I also don't want to temporarily run my speakers off the HU, since all that re-wiring will take a while. My stepfather used to work on electronics and he is very good fixing them. He will fix my amplifier for me, but first off I need to know what type of transistor I have to replace. If I go into an electronics store, what specifially would I ask for to get an exact replacement transistor? Id really apprecaite you alls help.
I would really suggest you just send it back to hifonics....it'll take like what, a week? They will probably give you a NEW amp, and thats better than if your stepfather accidentally messes something up...then you have no amp at all, and you have to buy a new one.
itll take weeks and weeks for hifonics to repair.
and although its possible that part wont be available at yoru local electronics store, its possible it will be, too.
find a local electronics parts supplier. for me its Mid-state electronics. in teh bay area, i go to Quement electronics. they are stores that specialize in electrical componentry and other parts of the like.
take a look at your transistor. itll have a part number written on teh face. although most likely those shops wont have that part number precicely, they should have tables that will allow them to find an identical part, performance wise.
then you uncle cna try soldering that part in place of the one that burned, and you cna hope that yrou amplifier will work perfectly after that.....

So whiterabbit, do you think that it is better for me to send it in and go ahead and suffer through not listening to music for a couple of weeks or try to get my stepfather to repair the blown transistor?
i dont know whats better, I only know what id do in the same situation.
this may not be a better solution, but im kinda thinking if it aint broke, dont fix it, right? I mean, there was an inherrent design problem in my 12 volt powersupply at home. the four power transistors absolutely roasted.
my EE buddy took a look at it, recommended the fix, i bought the transistors, and he put them in, i had a brand new powersupply, basically. $8 that saved me $250. but then again, i had nothing to lose, it woudlnt work
yoru amplifier, on the other hand, works. so is it really worth the trouble ot trying ot replace that taransistor? whats it going to do? work again? work better? what do you think the benefit of replacing it will be? and do you think ou cna accurately predict what that benefit will be? or is it more of a shot in the dark?
the bottom line, is its up to you, i have no idea what would be the best option
