? about dvd in car....
im a noob at audio stuff, so here goes. Dvd/indash/monitor: how does it work, like what do i need. i mean i dont wanna spend 1000 if possible. like i see u can buy an lcd monitor or something and i was guessing u could connect a ps2, which plays dvds and games and stuff and then u'd have something. or do u have to buy a dvd player and screen together. if i do, do the ps2 and monitor thing, like do i lose the whole cd concept, like i wont be able to play my cd's and stuff. really wish there was a faq thing for audio. im looking for that screen in my car, cuz i like how it looks and i wanna play dvds or games and stuff. some help would be appreciated. thanx. im just trying to have a screen, play dvds, and keep my music at teh same time. the games are a must, but are a plus

If your radio has aux in, you can get a ps2, plug it in to a screen, and slap the screen wherever your little heart desires. then run the aux in to the ps2 and youg et sound. advantage to useing separate ps2, is you can listen to music and still have your dvd/ps2 goin.
as far as i know, ALL dvd players will also play music CDs. This is my setup: radio/flip up screen in the top slot (pioneer AVH-p6400); dvd/vcd/cd player in bottom slot (pioneer SDV-p7). I will also be adding a TV tuner and a super nintendo in the near future. yea yea....u heard right.....super nintendo ownz j00
theres only nuff room for one of us here in Miami. Looks like we gonna have to rumble Ludlam!
But for real, I've been wanting to do that for THE LOOOOOOOONGEST time, just too lazy to go out and get a SNES thats in real good cond. . I'm dying to play Mario Kart. That game def rules!!!

back to what matters. You can buy one of those flipdown roof lcd's for like 300 bucks, ps2 is 250, thats 550 for a single screen + ps2. if your HU has aux ins, then all you need is an inverter for like 50 bucks max and an rca cable. in total its like a 600 dollar project. You can go the other route, but an in dash lcd unit, its right around a grand for a non dvd one, and buy a ps2, or you can buy an indash lcd with dvd for more like 1500-2000
man, i just came back from a guys house that i went to to get advised on about some computer classes i gotta take, and i saw an SNES sitting RIGHT under his TV! I was about to ask him if how much he'd let it go for, but I didnt wanna be rude.
Anyways, I got my Pioneer AVH-P6400 indash lcd on EBAY for $500 shipped. AWSOME headunit. I highly recommend it men.

I am thinking of getting a the Pioneer P8400MP. This unit has Aux inputs. My question is: What do I need to add DVD capabilities? I dont want to have to get rid of the P8400 later on. I am replacing the head unit right now and want to have the ability to expand. What should I do? Do I buy a single disc DVD player later, like the one mentioned above and a screen or what? Will the DVD player plug directly into the P8400 for sound or do I need something else to make it work? Bottom line: Will I be ok in the future with the P8400 and my plan for DVD ?

you could also get a stand alone monitor (with rca hook-ups of course) and hook the ps2 up to it and use an rf modulator to tap into the radio signal like you would a cd changer and come out a little cheaper maybe...

the 8400 doesnt have inputs on it, you have to buy an adapter that plugs into your ip bus plug on the back of the radio to have inputs on that radio. its like a $25 part i think. If you are going to spend that much on a hu, why dont you just buy one of their dvd hu's?
Oh, I thoughti t did have those inputs. Oh well, if it $25 extra I am still better off. I am getting the unit brand new for a good price, $250 US, so I guess I can get the adapter too. But is it going to be set up like I mentioned, ie the seperate DVD player plugs into the adapter that plugs into the 8400, then the video from the DVD plugs into the screen?
Titanium Metallic. You got a problem with that?

Well, you CAN hook up a Pioneer DVD player to your HU using an IP-Bus adapter in some aforementioned posts. . . . but remember, only EXTERNAL control can be achieved without the use of an AV head unit. So, be prepared to shell-out another $50-100 on a remote setup for the DVD player/changer.
So, once you have the HU, the screen, the DVD player, the remote setup, and the IP-Bus adapter. . . . you're probably in further than you're currently budgeting for, anyway. My advice, go up on www.etronics.com and order an AVH-P7480DVD which will do EVERYTHING right out of the box for a scant $1200 + shipping.
Your setup:
$250 for head unit, as you said
$200-500 for an LCD screen, depending on the quality you want. Mounting it will be a challenge, however.
$350 for the Pioneer SDV-P7 single DVD player (need another DIN spot to mount, btw)
OR $650 for the Pioneer XDV-P90 6-disc DVD changer
Either way, you'll need a remote unit. Take your pick:
$35 for the Pioneer CD-SE70 IR Remote Receiver for the SDV-P7
OR $50 for the Pioneer CD-R7 Remote Control and IR Repeater for the XDV-P90
You'll still need either a CD-RB10 or CD-RB20 Aux Input Adapter for the IP-Bus interface, $25 and $50, respectively
Let's see where we're at: (We'll use minimums)
$250 for HU
$200 for cheap screen that'll be hard to mount well
$350 for the SDV-P7 single DVD unit, need a place to put that, too
$35 for the remote for the SDV-P7
$25 for a CD-RB10 IP-Bus interface
Damn. . . $860, and that's for the BARE MINIMUM. Oh yeah, and you'll need a CD-VS33 Pioneer video switcher to run everything through in order to hook up ANY game system to all this. . . that's another $150, minimum.
Soo. . . . for a grand total of just over $1000, you can have a cheap, pieced-together system that'll probably end up frustrating you before you ever get it all working properly.
OR
You can get the AVH-P7480DVD for $1200 NOW. . . and not need ANY MORE EQUIPMENT. Seriously, it does it ALL. If you want to know how, I can explain. . . but suffice it say it has DVD AND screen built-in, as well as CD and AM/FM tuner with remote, and (get this) RCA inputs for a game system. . . and even A/V out for ANOTHER SCREEN, should you decide just one isn't enough.
Trust me, it's worth it to go for this, now. I did, and I haven't regretted it. The install is clean, everything works, and I'm very happy.

Whooa !!
Thanks for the reply, it really helped me. You know what you are talking about and pointed out things that may not have been obvious to me. Maybe I gotta start saving a bit more and get a system like you said.
Thanks again!!

This headunit is an "all-in-one" unit that will fit in a single DIN (it fits where you factory radio is...
It's a DVD Player, has 3 AV Inputs, has CD/CD-R Playback capabilities, can display MP3 text information (ID3 tags), and can even read CD text with "Text Scroll".
It's a bit pricy with an MSRP of $2,300.00, but you can get 'em MUCH cheaper by looking online or shopping around! (I've seen them for as low as $1,600.00.)

About the PS2 in your car... I've got to warn you; it's not a good idea.
The PS2 as a DVD player is CRAP!
The XBOX is FAR superior for DVD playback, but If you had a headunit that played DVD's, I wouldn't worry about a console playing them.
Anther bad thing about the PS2 is that its laser misaligns quite easily, and will begin skipping DVD's and game audio/FMV.
I work in the video game industry and I've killed 6 PS2's in the past 3 years, but my GameCube & XBOX are still going strong!
I hope this was helpful,

Maybe you guys can answer another thing for me. The manufacturer's usually state that these screens are not meant for driver seat viewing. In fact, the Alpine site refuses to give out any information on how to feed video into this MMM. Once this system is hooked up, will it show video or is there a special hookup requred to view on the driver's side. Does the car have to be in park in order to view the Video or was that just a recommendation by the manufacturers to cover thier azzes?
The emergency brake must be on for Movie viewing, but navigation will be displayed at any time.
There are "mods" for Alpine head units that will allow for driver viewing while the car is in motion and the emergency brake OFF.

Indeed. . . the "mods" aren't that difficult, either. *tight lip*
So long as the head unit will play video (such as DVD) you should be fine with just getting a screen to pipe the video to. Again. . . mounting the screen can be tricky, so sometimes it's easier to get it all in the dash and be desreet about it.

Indeed. However, the DVD player with screen must also contain AV controls and a tuner. In other words, just the DVD player/screen model (AVX-P7300DVD) won't work unless you have another receiver to plug it into. So make sure the one you're looking at does it ALL.
Screen
DVD player (also playing CDs, of course)
AM/FM tuner
System control
There are only a few models that DON'T do all this, so finding one that does won't be hard.

I have the P7400MP deck and it's awesome. I'd always thought I'd have to drop like $2K for a DVD player, but I never thought of putting a PS2 (or more likely an X-Box) into the car and getting DVD capabilities that way.
I might do the AVH-P6400 screen and get the necessary hook-ups, that wouldn't be all that expensive ...

Indeed. . . you'll have full control over the A/V system with either of those head units. And you can hook-up 1 or 2 screens without the need for any adapters or boxes.
For the price difference, I'd look at the 7000, though. . . many more features for not much more money.
