I just bought a Alpine deck (Alpine CDA 7894). I got it for 307 (including shipping) and retail is 400 or something crazy like that.. It has MP3 playback, sub preouts and sub level control, detachable motorized face, 4volt gold plated preouts, remote control, 60x4 ....and some other things.. it sounds really good and has alot of power compared to alot of other cdplayers.. i'll try to find the site where i got it from and post it back on here later tonight.

Ikesound.com has good deals on Pioneer and kenwood HUs.
Most people will suggest these brands:
Alpine
Clarion
Kenwood
Eclipse
Pioneer

Its all about the Pioneer with the OEL Display.
I have the DEH6400 (the 7400 has MP3 but I got a really good deal at circuit city on the 6400). The OEL display is awesome! I can always see it no matter what. Highly recommended. Sounds very good too.

Rep Power: 317 i dont know about the higher end pioneers, or the new 2003 models, but my old 7400mp had one really annoying feature, slow mp3 playback. everything else about my 7400mp was great, just that one feature really got to me.
alpine seems to have a great rep for HU's. my local shop doesn't carry alpine, but they really want to because even the guys that work there know that alpine HU's are great, and they would love to sell them.
i have a clarion dxz835mp, it could be found for a decent price on the net, features include mp3 and wma playback ( fast playback to ), motorized face, 728 color changeable display, three sets of 4 volt pre outs, and dual 24 bit dac's ( still trying to find out what this is exactly, but doesn't it sound cool
).

Rep Power: 0 Alpine, and Pioneer are definitly the best quality for that price renge. which one depends on what features you want. Personally I'd be looking for something with MP3 playback.
