6x9 mounting height

6xp mounting height
Anybody out there have any problem mounting 6x9's in the rear of your 2003 (or other) Civic coupe other than the three models Crutchfield recommends?
I have a hard time believing 7/16" is the max mounting height allowed. I stuck a paperclip up through a hole adjacent to the speaker and measured more than an inch of clearance between the steel deck and the speaker grill covering. What gives???
